This came up in another thread and I thought it was worth discussing. I think 2014 was a particularly strong year in film, but I also think that the Academy royally fucked (shocking, I know) in their awards. Birdman won Best Picture (a fine pick in my opinion), but the other nominees for the award were Selma, American Sniper, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. I personally thought that Gone Girl was an egregious snub and Foxcatcher was a considerable snub as well. Also, American Sniper and The Theory of Everything were dog shit.

My top ten for the year would go:
  1. Boyhood
  2. Birdman
  3. Gone Girl
  4. Selma
  5. Foxcatcher
  6. The Imitation Game
  7. The Babadook
  8. Whiplash
  9. Guardians of the Galaxy
  10. The Grand Budapest Hotel
Honorable Mentions: Nightcrawler, Under the Skin, Two Days One Night

Nightcrawler and Whiplash are definitley my top two for 2014. I thought Birdman was pretentious as fuck even though Keaton had a great performance.

Foxcatcher was great too, so that'll be third on the list for me.

Edge of Tomorrow
Whiplash
Foxcatcher
Birdman
The Theory of Everything
Predestination
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Nightcrawler
Fury or The Equalizer or John Wick or Grand Budapest Hotel or Under the Skin

American Sniper was dog shit.

I didn't watch much in 2014. Nightcrawler wasn't a great film, but dat Gyllenhaal performance was special. I was gonna start my own Oscars after he got snubbed

Yeah, Nightcrawler didn't do much for me, but Gyllenhaal was objectively excellent. Meanwhile, I appreciated Whiplash more in terms of its direction (although it became a little...much at times), but I did not care for the lead actor.

I literally didn't watch a single movie on your list TS

I've only heard of like two of them

Perhaps I am an uncultured swine

Actually no I am one for sure

I think Foxcatcher was the only new movie I watched in 2014.

I liked it, so that.

Goddamn 2014 was a good year. Whiplash resonates with me strongly as a mediocre drummer.

I probably can't name 10 films but here's my list.

I Origins
Interstellar
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Predestination
NightClawer

And surprisingly
John Wick - I don't normally like action films or popcorn flicks.

Here are some movies I like from that year, no special order here

Whiplash
Budapest Hotel
Winter Soldier
Guardians
Chef
Big hero 6
Imitation Game
Fury
Days of Future Past
Planet of the Apes
A Most Violent Year
Locke with Tom Hardy is underrated

1. Gone Girl
2. John Wick
3. The Drop
4. Whiplash
5. The Best Offer
6. A Most Violent Year
7. NightCrawler
8. Under The Skin
9. The Equalizer
10. The Gambler

Feel pretty confident about the order of the top 3. The rest could be moved around some.

Hons: Let's Be Cops, Annabelle, 22 Jump Street, Foxcatcher, The Babadook

1. Gone Girl
2. John Wick
3. The Drop
4. Whiplash
5. The Best Offer
6. A Most Violent Year
7. NightCrawler
8. Under The Skin
9. The Equalizer
10. The Gambler

Under the skin was good. Forget that one

Whiplash
GoTG
Interstellar
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Edge of Tomorrow
CA: Winter Soldier
X-Men: DoFP
Nightcrawler
John Wick
Equalizer

Not in order

Equalizer
John wick
Sin city
Fox catcher

Nothing else peaked my fancy that year

I'm guessing it was me who mentioned I thought it was the best year for film this decade? Ex Machina I consider a 2015 film though by UK release.

I would say a top 10 of something like...

1.Under The Skin
2.Inherant Vice
3.Ida
4.Whiplash
5.Calvary
6.Guardians of the Galaxy
7.The Duke of Burgundy
8.Birdman
9.Nightcrawler
10. Mr Turner

Calvary especially would I think go down well with a lot of Sherdoggers, Brendan Gleeson at his best.
