Any advice on workouts to help improve squeeze strength of the guillotine? I'm guessing a lot of curls and shoulder presses would help develop the muscles needed for the move.

shoulder press?

practicing the technique will improve your guillotine far more than lifting weights.

maybe concentration curls and hold it at the top.

also bent over barbell rows.

Barbell rows....or get on a rowing machine. That would help both strength and endurance.

Arm in or arm out?

Are you sure your technique is correct?
Are you shifting your hips out once you lock it in?

It doesn't take much to submit someone with a guillotine once properly applied.

most jiu jitsu submissions including the guilliotine is like doing a deadlift/back extension.

I'll admit that my technique isn't perfect, but you know that not all guillotines are created equal. Sometimes in a scramble you don't have time to lock up the position as well as you like. Some people have amazing squeezing power and are able to make up for lack of setup. Urijah Faber and Joe Stevenson have great guillotines and are known for crushing power in the position as well.

Here's a secret -- the best way to train the guillotine (and the way most guys in Brazil train it) is to get a bunch of coconuts. Then practice squeezing them inside the guillotine position until you can crack them easily with your forearm. By the time you can crack them open regularly, you'll be able to tap guys very easily on the mat. Good luck!

When they have side control on you=guillotine them, when they mount you=guillotine them, even when there in north south=guillotine them. Make sure every position they get on you, just guillotine them for the tap. I mean everyone in UFC does it so it HAS to work from everywhere, ya know? Just get stronger, so you dont have to worry about anything else, as long as your guillotine is the best, you win.

Remember what they say.."If you wanna make them pay, give them one guillotine a day!"

I would say that you should do Downward dog to Up dog like Hindu Pushups plus do like half moon pushups and also invest in one of those ab wheels for rolling sprawled out and going back to like touching your toes position- that and drilling (drilling is the most important obviously but I'm trying to appease the TS). You don't want to squeeze as much as you want to turn and twist to constrict.

Forget technique. You need to tan more. If you're tanner you're more jacked, stronger, deadlier. Why do you think Brazilians are the best? Wicked tan. It's science.

brilliant.

some great funny comments here. To the TS, it's a technique that is technique driven forget the workouts to improve your guilotine. I've seen 100 lbs. kids pull it off better than 220 lbs. men, wanna know why because the kids had the technique down while muscle man tried to put practical use to all those dumbell curls.

So in short learn how to do the technique better, don't over penetrate with the choking arm, use the blade of the arm, grip at the wrist with the free hand and once everything is in place with your hooks in extend your body. They will tap.

Guillotines are a power move. If a guy is strong enough, he'll be able to bust out. Work on your upper body strength.

technique > strength

technique + strength > technique

That said, you should not be trying to build certain muscles for certain moves. That's just stupid. You should try and be strong overall. Read the S&P forum. Lift Heavy weights that use a lot of muscle groups at once with good form.
