Hello guys, I am about to have my first official amateur bout next weekend and I wanted to ask for a little bit of advice from some of the more seasoned guys here. Ok I come to notice that two of the "top pro MMA fighters in the world" Anderson Silva and GSP have something in common. They stand in a wide leg fighting stance with there knees slightly bent, can anyone here explain the benefits of this stance for me.

Don't emulate other fighters. Do what works for you.

Doing what works for me is out striking training partners until they double leg me in frustration, I guess I was hoping someone would tell me that the wide stance would help with being better prepared to sprawl.

Pros

-You'll have more power in your punched because you're guaranteed to sit into them in a wide mma stance.

-Having a wide base make's it much easier to sprawl and defend against underhooks.

- Allows you to change levels more fluidly to execute takedowns from striking.

Cons

-Having a wide base means a bigger target for your opponent

-Much harder to throw a non telegraphed Thai kick when you're in a wide base witha low centre of gravity

- Harder to fight for Thai plum

-Straight punches aren't as effective as they are in an upright, pure striker stance

hope that helps mate

It's a lot harder to grab the single leg when your opponent is in a wider stance.

Wide stance:
+ stronger left hooks and left kicks
+ easier lead leg check
+ better sprawl, less susceptible to single legs
+ faster shot
- straight punches suffer range
- larger target; you'll probably end up getting hit in the body a lot by front kicks or body hooks since you can't defend everything at once

Side stance:
+ smaller target, better defense
+ better straight punches
- less range on hook and no left kick
- harder to sprawl
- harder to check lead leg kicks

If you are just doing boxing, stick to a side stance. Most of the benefits of the wide stance only effect MMA or MT fighters.

I agree with everything except the part about the kicks, unless we both have a different wide stance in mind. I'm thinking of wide and low, are you? If so I don't think it's easier to throw kicks or check them when your weight is all on your lead checking kick

Yeah, I'm thinking MT, not MMA. Wide and low is more about base and mobility, not kicking

Okay. Let them take you down. Just get back up. Sometimes if you just force something to happen, it does eventually. If you're outboxing people from your natural stance, keep doing what you're doing.

Besides that, Anderson Silva's major weakness is his wrestling. Do you really want to emulate him if your concern is getting taken down?

Wtf? Wide? By 'wide' do you mean 'front on' and 'hands far apart'? Feet wide and narrow is more a boxing stance.

muay thai has a wider stance than boxing. this is due to the fact that the fighter uses this wider stance to keep balance when taking kicks to the legs and or giving powerful kicks to an opponent.

Anderson Silva has fantastic TDD.

wide deep stance allows you to move forward as well as backwards at he same speed ,,also allows you to move back at your waist and still be in range for a counter ,,,,, you can easily kick from this stance going forward or backwards ,you have to train for the motion of kicking while backing up as this does not come naturally and has to be practised ,,,, karate guys and tae kwon do guys have been using a deep wide stance and punching and kicking from that stance for years ,,,,,in my own experience usually when someone goes from a regular stance to a deeper stance they are looking for a counter ,,,,, as machida and anderson silva do ,,,, peace out
