Why not make co-MAIN EVENTS 5 rounds?

Time maybe. Cards are bigger than ever now. There are like 13 fights a card. Many co mains are not very good and not worth 5 rounds. A 5 rounder is supposed to be for a special or exceptional fight.

Don't really care either way.

It might be the next step, in case the main gets cancelled, like Hendo vs. Rashad. Or a clause for the co-main where it becomes a 5-rounder if the main gets scrapped.

But three rounds usually is enough for me. I don't even need to see 5 rounds in plenty of the non-title main events these days.

Title fights and number 1 contender fights should be 5 rounds. That way there is no confusion who the number 1 contender is.

Number of reasons really. 5 round fights take a bit more out of a fighter's longevity, require more preparation on the fighters' part and have a bigger chance of displeasing the crowd if they turn out to be stinkers.

they may get there. one thing at a time. remember, only 2 years ago main events that weren't title shots were 3 rounds too.

in my humble opinion, there seems to be a lot that goes into the decision of 3 or 5 rounds than meets the average fans' eyes. i remember when Hendo v Machida was signed as a 3 rounder, before they even had a main event. i wondered right then wtf was going on. later, a month or so later, they gave the main event to Ronda. when people complained i thought, wait a fucking minute, they decided LONG AGO (at least a month ago) that Hendo v Machida wouldnn't be main event, regardless of Ronda.

Co-main event should have 3 7-minute rounds and the main event 5 7-minute rounds

I don't understand the obsession with 5-round fights. Fighters struggle to go 3 rounds without gassing. Imagine another 2 rounds of a HW fight like Nelson/Miocic, for example. Nelson was damn-near dead from exhaustion and Miocic was slowing down big time.

I think 5 round fights for contender fights is brilliant, 7 rounders for titles. Then 3 rounders for the meat of the card.

7 Rounders would be like 12 rounders in boxing=35/36 mins

5 Rounders like 10 rounders=25/30 mins

and 3 rounders like 6 rounders=15/18 mins

Something I've thought about for a while.

Most people don't like watching fights as much as I do though so they'll probably just complain about having to watch mma for a longer period of time.

absolutely not. making a non-main event that isn't a title fight a 5-round fight makes no sense. unless the ufc is going to increase each figher's pay by a respectable amount of money. then i bet a good deal of fighters would do it.

The UFC made plenty of "#1 contender fights" that, in fact, weren't actually #1 contender fights (i.e. Hendricks/Kampmann). Not to mention, flyweights, for example, aren't usually billed high on cards and are stuck on Facebook, so how would the UFC go about making a so-called #1 contender flyweight fight 5-rounds? Automatically make it co-main? Start off a card with a 5-round fight?

Seems like a hassle and doesn't really make sense to me.

Not all co-main, but the really big ones where two top 6 or 7 guys are fighting each other should be. If #3 is fighting #5 and #'s 2 and 4 have already fought for the belt and lost, even if they're not immediately next in line for a title shot, it's still a huge fight as far as the rest of the decision is concerned.

Uhhm.....

No.

watch UFC 33 for the reason they are hesitant to put too many 5-rounders on a single card
