Why not Gatorade in between rounds?

Why don't I see fighters drinking Gatorade or Powerade or any other type of drink with electrolytes and glucose? They mostly seem to drink water. Wouldn't it be a good idea to drink something with sugar to replenish the glycogen stores of the muscles?

It probably wouldnt deliver fast enough and be effective at the doses they'd use (as to not cause cramping).

Water just makes more sense.

Well the article doesn't make a very strong point.. no Gatorade because it wouldn't be fair if your opponent is only drinking water...lol. Same could be same regarding all the supplements.

And Gatorade would deliver fast enough. The sugar would be used by the brain immediately. When I train with water I usually end up light headed and feel sick by the end but when I sip on Gatorade in between breaks I feel perfectly fine at the end of the most intense training sessions.

I'm still looking to see if there is a scientific/biochemical reason as to why these drinks aren't used by fighters.

For some reason I thought it was against the rules to have anything other than water between rounds.

For events lasting less than 30 minutes fluid ingestion is not recommended. Most MMA fights last less than 30 minutes therefore carbs would not benefit performance as they would not be available in the time frame. Fluid can be used to eleviate dry mouth or improve perceived exertion. I see alot of fighters spit the water out rather than swallow. Training usually lasts more than 30 minutes allowing fluids which are ingested to be utilised within that session.

Thank you, I completely ignored the time variable. You are right it wouldn't really be useful in MMA but I guess it could help in boxing since the fights tend to last much longer.

water is used quicker by the body anyway, so I imagine its better for a fight meanwhile gatorade is better for all day training, to keep you from losing too much fluids through out.

1. I believe that water is the only thing that fighters are allowed to drink according to the athletic comissions.
2. The sugars and carbohydrates from the Gatorade can make a fighter crash in the middle of the round, which would be very very bad.

I don't know about that one.
If a fighter could crash in the middle of the round, wouldn't an NFL player be able to crash in the middle of a play or posession? Yet, that's all NFL players drink during a game.

i think gatorade has more money to pay than "water"

That is correct. For my last fight (well what would have been if the guy hadn't got fighters flu) they said we could have what we wanted before (redbull, No-xplode) but water, and ONLY water at the ring. They even checked the water bottles.

but do you think taking No-explode would be a smart choice before a fight?

If you were to use it pre-workout and you find it helps, it shouldn't be any different. That said, my first fight I didn't take it, and this one I did, but the guy backed out so I have no idea if it's good or not.
My buddy took some and lit his guy up in the first round, so it does work for SOME people anyhow.

Water is better because your body doesn't have to digest it. It just goes straight into your bloodsteam.

just like whey.

That and they probably don't want gatorade stains on the canvas.. :P ..

But like others said.. it's fastest to get into your system..

So in that case, what do the rules say if a fighter shits himself? LOL
