Roger Gracie's dad was Mauricio Gomes one of the Famous Five from Rolls Gracie and a 7th Degree black and red belt

He was an amazing fighter and one of the best in his time.

I am wondering why Roger goes by the name of Gracie. Is it for marketing?

A lot of them do that. Many of them will use the Gracie surname for obvious reasons even though their actual last name may be something otherwise. It's quite common in their family. For instance, Kyra's mother is a Gracie & she was given her father's surname of Guimares, yet she actively competes & promotes herself under the Gracie name. I think Cesar's last name is actually Gronning or something like that. I guess to them, the name is a badge of honor & they want to wear it where everyone can see it. It doesn't bother me. I like family pride & traditions, & I'm sure that name makes them feel more in touch with their family "dynasty." Especially if they're involved in BJJ or MMA....

Get ready for the shocking news!
People all around the world take their last names from both of their parents. Roger Gracie's name is in fact Roger Gracie Gomes afaik he also registers under this name. Why would he be more know going by his mother's family name? Well I leave this to your curiosity.

Would you run for president as Roger Gomes or Roger Kennedy?

I'm a Gracie through my mother but I decided to stick with my father's name, Whimpey, so I go by Rellno Whimpey, but if I started a dojo I would definately change it to Rellno Gracie.

he does not wish to bring honour to his real family name, that is why.

Do portuguese take both family names like hispanic countries

Also me was raised by his "Gracie" family, carlonihios financially supported a lot of his relatives. Who do you think helped out rolls wife and kids after he passed?

portuguese naming convention: given name, monther family name, father familly name.
Roger Gracie Gomes

Its slightly different to the spanish speaking world where its usually: given name, fathers family name, mothers family name.

Why would you go by a name that is one letter away from "Whimpy"? I'd have changed that the moment I turned 18.

Better question.. why is it Roger and not Hoger?

Not in eastern Europe they don't. (and probably in a lot of other regions of the world)
So TS's confusion is understandable.

you mean why is it Hoger and nor Roger?

Nah, actually Roger prefers that people calling him Roger with the english pronunciation of the "R" rather than "Hoger" with the Brazilian pronunciation.

But it's just preference. Probably has something to do with growing up in the UK.
