Why don't we see more giftwraps in MMA?

This thread is inspired by Aisling Daly's finish of Angela Magana on TUF. For those who haven't seen it, she won via giftwrap TKO.

The giftwrap is one of the most dominant positions in all of MMA, and yet we rarely see it. Some examples of it include: Dong Hyun Kim vs Sadollah (end of round 2)

Dustin Pague vs John Albert (finish)

and Amir Sadollah vs Damarques Johnson (gif finish).

See how Damarques Johnson's right arm is across his own throat. Sadollah is holding on to Johnson's right hand, preventing Johnson from escaping the position. Sadollah is free to fire right hands, as Johnson has no way of blocking.

So, anyone want to A: provide some more examples where this technique was used, and B: provide an explanation why it's so rare?

(might do another thread like this next week on another super dominant position rarely seen)

I've only gotten in training on the NEW guys. None of the the other fighters.its pretty difficult to get an adult like that.

Possibly the most high profile giftwrap finish in MMA history: BJ Penn finishes Ludwig with an arm triangle after establishing the giftwrap.

I agree with the poster above. It's hard to get into that position, I could probably count on my fingers how many times I've put someone else/been put in that position in training.

ricksons signature move!!!

the one at the bottom should be very rocked / have very little bjj experience

Diego Sanchez won half of his fights by giftwrapped decisions, does that count?

Hard move to pull off. Any fighter with good training off their back should be able to avoid getting put into that position.

Damn BJ handled business like it wasn't shit. I miss that BJ. :icon_sad:

It's pretty effective! It also works when you are in yours opponents half guard.
I once had my trainer ,who is like 40 pounds heavier than me and is a BJJ Black Belt, in this position (while Sparring) and was able to pound him till the end of the round. He was pretty suprised (me too).

It's not hard to get that position but anyone familiar with it will be able to get out fairly easily. We call it the arm wrap at my gym and theres a nice arm bar and arm triangle choke off of it, also a nice kimura-like lock if you shift your mount to the other side.

It's easy to get your dumb brother in this, but not someone who is prepared.

The crucifixion position leaves you with no arms to defend with!

Probably because most guys who are worth a damn will make it very difficult to end on the wrong side of one of the most dominant positions in mma.

Because it's hard to get, even in straight bjj where you can get a better grip with no glove.
