Like just do a camp where they drill wrestling offense and defense. Every single day.

Drill each techniques or chains of techniques with power, then speed, then accuracy under fatigue, etc.

I been to different MMA clubs and they don't really always do that stuff, I don't get it.
 
How can you even train BJJ subs and low success sweeps and type of guards when you don't got wrestling and the dude on top is doing everything to control you?

BJJ should be secondary

Training pure BJJ is like this too

You basically need a high level wrestling coach that also has a high understanding of jiu-jitsu, how to crush it, how to threaten with subs yourself, all the while not exposing yourself to subs and sweeps

Not every gym can afford multiple coaches for this and what happens is the jiu-jitsu/grappling coach ends up teaching the wrestling aspects sometimes with very little wrestling background themselves

Also the training partners. Some gyms have a lot of good wrestlers while some may not have any at all, and some with very few

I’ve been submission grappling for around 20yrs straight and now with my son in his 3rd year wrestling, I see so many moves I have never seen or thought of and am learning all the time. Wrestling is a very “deep book” of knowledge and I have a lot of respect for it
 
What they do is fly out high level wrestlers and trainers for fight camp. Costs a lot and they don't do this for every opponent. That leaves them without that level of training for the rest of the year. Now if the gym does have enough of those coaches year round it's another story. It's why you see many champs/contenders coming out of the same gym.
 
Drilling eyepokes is easier to become proficient with considerably less injuries and hours on the matts, just saying, Gustafsson mastered both and was a monster in his prime. Took two of the best wrestlers in Jones and DC to the absolute limit and kept the fights standing.

Slightly unrelated, but I'm really puzzled by wrestlers who show zero BJJ or submission threat.

The kind of fighters who never ever takes the back or even tries for rear naked chokes, even after 20+ pro fights.

Is it some kind of muscle memory thing?
Or are they just uncoordinated or too slow to react to opportunities?
Scared of making a mistake and losing position?
 
I train for a hobby and I already do that, I'm pretty sure UFC fighters are doing wrestling drills. Some people just never get as good at it. You'd probably be surprised how good the average fighter is at wrestling compared to a regular person, but when you put them in with someone who's levels above they look like they've never done it before. We do drills in every class and some people never seem to improve in some areas, then you get guys who pick it up straight away. I'm 'the guy with good wrestling' at my gym, people often ask me how I got so good, we literally do the exact same classes.

They all train wrestling and drill it...

Same as wrestling practice.. you still get guys who are levels above the rest..

They bring in Olympic guys and the best of the best and even train with them...

It's not the wrestling it's the unknown the tricks guys come up with the ones who utilize things that catch you off guard or the way they do it... That makes them good. Who has the better understanding.

The good MMA fighters probably do. People don't generally like wrestling because it is very exhausting, tough on the body, and boring (according to some, but not me). If MMA gyms focused too much on wrestling, they'd probably go out of business. However, for the pro fighters, drilling wrestling is paramount.

Who's not training wrestling? ..

You can drill all you want but if that's not your style of fighting its not going to pay off the same as someone who's in love with that style of fighting...

What is really happening is the skill in MMA is regressing abit because everyone is too concerned about how much fucking weigh can i cut...how can i be two divisions bigger then opponent then actually rounding out their games and creating solutions to something as old as wrestling.... Wrestling dominance has already came and went in MMA once before ...the answers already exist.. theres always an answer
 
Always wondered what would happen if you put MVP in Dagestan for 2 years when he was younger. You'd expect him to come out impossible to takedown. His wrestling has improved since he started, and he's probably been drilling it since doing MMA. But it just never seemed to get to the level to stop elite guys like Lawlers TDD did.
