Why don't more fighters get their nose broken in the UFC/MMA?

I don't know anything about specialized striking, perhaps fighters attempt to use pin point accuracy and aim for the chin or somewhere else and not the nose but Shogun's broken nose on Saturday made me think, "You really don't see a lot of broken noses in the UFC/MMA."

Even if fighters are aren't aiming for the nose, plenty of punches land on the nose. How hard can the nose be, it's basically cartilage, right?

So, why aren't there more broken noses in UFC/MMA fights?

Well, the nose is actually a pretty small target. You basically have to clip it with a hook or an uppercut such that you completely catch the nub of bone (much smaller than the mass of cartilage surrounding it) with the punch going through it instead of hitting the cheeks or something.

BJ broke GSP's nose with an uppercut that clipped his nose because he was backing away as Penn gunned for his chin.

Hands up. Nose is right between the eyes. Blockable shots.

but noses do get broken very often in mma/boxing

It happens plenty of times. Guys just suck it up.

Its the H-Bomb. "Thats a different kind of punch, Mike" like Rogan would say.

There are very few exceptional boxers in MMA so it would universally be less of an issue than in boxing where that is all they do and are more accurate. I am surprised it does not happen more often since there are a lot of strikers who block shots with their face and keep their hands relatively low.

A 'broken nose' is generally refering to the breaking of the cartlidge. A lot of the time it's not really noticeable visibly and unless it's really bad you certainly won't feel it much with all the adrenaline of a fight.

I've been out on the town, got in a fight and not even noticed my nose was broken until I woke up the next day with two black eyes where all the blood had drained in to my eye sockets.

Actually breaking the bone socket is very rare as it is essentially cracking your skull and you will almost never see it in a fight as most likely the punching hand will break before the skull.

It happens a lot, its rarely as noticeable as it was on Shogun

Most of the time if you see a guy bleeding quite a bit out of his nose, that means it was broken

Well, noses do get broken but the one you saw Sunday was very rare. Maia had his nose broken against Silva but it wasn't like Shogun. Shogun nose was broken so badly that the fight would of been stopped by the doctor or his corner if he survived. They do happen but they are not as noticeable, Shoguns is very noticeable because of its severity.

Many do. They just don't get pushed to the other side of guys' face very often.

Nah I disagree, I've bled from the nose without it feeling like it's broken loads of time.

Not to mention, the fist also compresses.

I disagree with your assertion. Noses are broken every card but usually not in the destructive manner of Shogun's and say Brandon Vera's after he fought Thiago Silva or Rich Franklin after his fight with Anderson.
