It's better if he doesn't opt out. If he forces them to re-sign him this 2014 offseason, his new salary will be on the books counting against the cap when they go to sign 2015 FAs. If he plays out his contract next season and becomes a 2015 FA, they can sign other 2015 FAs until they're at the cap limit, THEN use Bird rights to go over the cap to re-sign Canmelo.

I'm sure they're aware of this. We'll see what happens this offseason. If it's 1999 all over again, like myself, and all the other experts believe it is, then The Knicks will be in the Finals this year, and Melon might reconsider opting out.
