Rewatched the Outsiders the other day with son and pointed out how great this cast was.

Thinking back on Matt Dillon, he stole the movie and for a while had it all, the looks, the fame, etc. Why did his career seem to stall? DrugStore Cowboy was so good.

He was awesome in Something About Mary.....but never took that momentum forward.

What's up with that?

I feel like Vince Vaughn took some roles I could've seen Dillon in.

That might however just be because of You me and Dupree. A film in which it's hard not seeing Vaughn in Dillon's role because of him having much better chemistry with Owen. The chemistry between Dillon and Owen in that movie is pretty nonexistent.

Rumble Fish didnt really to that well and only seems to have picked up serious popularity in the last 10-20 years, a lot of the scripts he picked after that just tended to be rather middling films which made him into a B level Cruise(which still probably paid very well). Wasnt really until the late 90's he started to move beyond that as more of a character actor.

There can only be so many huge stars. That, and he seemed to dabble in several genres. Had he gone all-out in one of them(eg raunchy comedies after Something About Marry), might have been a bigger star.

Having said that; the man’s obviously had a very successful career as an actor, and one that few will ever achieve.

I'm not saying that he's a failure or didn't make it in life.
Just felt like he was destined for upper echelon A list status for life.......I'd like to see more of his work....that's all.
