Why did you choose the guard you currently use?

Originally I was a bravo guy so I used a ton of rubber guard then as I expanded my game, I started using butterfly then switched to z guard.

My guard game was always based on what I wanted to based my game on rubber guard for mma defense, butterfly for sweeps etc.

I've recently started using more butterfly to start working leg locks.

Why did you choose the guard that you use?

I've been using butterfly always because it gets me to X. I use X because I'm a bit shorter so it's easier for me to sweep or take the back from there. But that's only my personal experience

Currently using some butterfly and deep half. As a short dude deep half is a pretty good plan B for any failed guard.

I find it easier to use DHG in nogi to be honest. If it's true you have less means to control your opponent from bottom, it is also true that he doesn't have your gi to control you, which I find it way better when I'm using for example DHG to create a scramble and get away.

By the way I use half guard, butterfly and SLX as my main ones. Half guard was the first guard I've ever played so it will always have a special place in my heart. I also like Butterfly and SLX as they are very versatile and most of all rarely leave me in positions like stack passes.

I play all different guards depending on the day / mood I'm in. BJJ should be fun!

But... if things get serious, its half guard. Knee shield, deep, leite style, g-roll, half butterfly- just so many options.

Yes, I love half guard because of the direct threat of the back however getting smashed constantly is played out. I also want to study leg locks entries and concepts undertook half doesn't have a consistent ashi garami access.

Have you thought about using Craig Jones style attacks. The overhook half is garbage in the gi but he seems to be getting a bunch of success with leg locks from half.

you mean some of his z guard stuff? I've dabbled with some of it but not much. I've been experimenting with his cross butterfly entries to the saddle.... doesn't seem complicated until you end up in with your partners nuts on your forehead in those sessions I think to myself " I've made some pretty bad life choices."

Closed guard all the way. Sound silly, but watching the UFC is what got me into BJJ and seeing the success of submissions from closed guard always intrigued me. Especially guys like Paul Sass

I wanted to play a guard system that was easy on my hands, I could do gi/nogi, could do in self defense/mma, scaled well despite opponent size, and was conducive towards longevity.

Basically the only thing I can play after all this was a butterfly/SLX/X complex. It's a nice bonus that these guards generally keep my legs safe and also allow me to explore the leg game deeper at some point in the future.

I've heard that it's a complete guard system but I disagree - you need some kind of "on your back", half guard variation for when you get flattened out and can't go SLX. For this I either go Z guard or half butterfly.

I will sparsely play closed guard and only really use the other guards (e.g. spider, DLR) to funnel into my main guards.

Seems like an obvious combo against people who stall in knee shield and don't let you get the underhook.

I've tried literally every guard. They all have pros and cons, and they all cause different joints in my body to hurt. I've ended up with a half-guard heavy blend, with 50/50 for dudes that stand.

As for why? 50/50 requires the least athletic input from me. Getting to 50/50 can be tough, and my body can only sustain so many other guards these days, so usually I'm a bad xerox of Bernardo Faria (which only requires mental/physical endurance and skin grafts to replace your ears).

If you're trying to pick a guard, my advice is learn one or two sweeps from all of them. Whichever guard/sweep hurts your body the least, and doesn't make you want to quit jiu jitsu by playing it all the time, is the one for you.

I don't think there's any guard position that doesn't look/feel intensely homoerotic.

depends on what sport i am for bjj i prefer collar sleeve guard been using it since 2009 can attack triangles armlocks like crazy can always switch to a de la riva hook if need be can break posture very well toma nage sweeps if they get to pressure happy

no gi i prefer a half guard or half butterfly cause love sweeping with hooks and love coming up to singles in no gi u dont have as much control so its not good to play a loose game i use t still like t play a range guard gae with feet on hips making them chase me and catch them with subs but after brown i learnt i was wasting my time and good guys are to smart so i started having a really strong attacking half using wrestling never giving them a chance

mma half guard leite style coming up to a single or or feet on hips with a strong overhook to set up my butterfly sweep or triangle/bellydown armlock

I've been trying to 50/50 people who are standing up on me. Sometimes I get the kneebar (I'm not sure what else to do) but with better guys I end up getting leg dragged.

How do I prevent this?

I'm trying to figure it out now.

In the gi I like spider and lasso guard because an instructor told me they would suit me. Yes, I expect finger damage. But so far they are working well for me, along with X guard and DLR. In general my gi guard game has come a long way and become a position of strength with good options for sweeps and subs, and that's how I can see what works.

In nogi I haven't found that. I use some half guard and RDLR. And SLX. But I need way better nogi guard options. I tend to fall back on whatever works defensively when I am on bottom in nogi instead of finding a guard that reliably allows me to sweep. I'm only a blue belt so I expect I have time to improve; unfortunately my next two comps are nogi so I need to figure something out soon.

There's a literally nothing wrong with closed guard. The biggest weakness is that you can be to defensive. An active closed guard can be big trouble.

I like 5050 a lot but I getting there is my biggest problem. I am not good enough at forcing the position
