Why are upkicks illegal

Because you can't kick a grounded opponent?

Another much weirder rule is not being able to stomp feet of a grounded oponent (although that may have been specific for that states commission)

Probably because it would be a huge disadvantage to BJJ and wrestlers. I think its dumb though if both guys are grounded, kicks should be legal.

They're not.

Kicking a grounded fighter in the head is
Mmm than change the words.

Keep soccer kicks and stomps illegal. Upkicks legal. We know what an upkick is. Grounded is also a fantasy term. When you stand you are not flying but grounded too. Just change the words around. Upkicks always legal grounded or not. Kicking up from your back. If you are grounded you can throw a upkick.

I don't get it either.

I swear a lot of these rules were created in a time period where our understanding of MMA was so crude that they were throwing darts at a board.

The 12-6 thing is another example.

We see people regularly get flatlined by kicks to the head that are just as powerful as upkicks.

The only one I agree with banning is the soccer kick to the head. It's not something I particularly want to see; especially to someone at 10% consciousness.

CTE and US athletic commission sanctioning. Need to draw lines for limiting severe damage. Rule is broadly no kicks to head of downed fighter. Off your back, standing or kneeling.

That is the point. See they are illegal. If the guy is grounded. I want them to always be legal. I know the rules.

All kicks are illegal on the ground. It's a dumb a rule but a rule nonetheless. We will never have Pride or Japanese rules in UFC. Maybe One

The difference is that your mobility is much more limited if you're grounded. If you get kicked in the head while you're on your feet, you have a chance to get out of the way. If you're on your knees, what are you supposed to do?

they figure if you full force up kick someone who is on their knees, could wind up with some serious spinal injuries, and prob not wrong about that tbh
