If i go to the gas station and ask for a pack of matches, they are free.

The gas station must have paid for them at some point, so they are losing money by doing this.

I just dont understand Why they are free.

"Freebies" to help generate more business.

Like peanuts in bars which induces drinking.

advertising most of the time

or the gas station attendant was suicidal and wanted to you bring em to the pumps

Are you homeless?

A homeless person is the only person I could imagine being down on their luck enough to have to ask a gas station for help lighting something on fire

I've never asked for free matches. seems like a weird thing to ask for, or even offer. Honestly who uses matches except in a satirical sense? Doesn't everyone use lighters? If you can afford to buy something to burn i.e. cigarette, can't you afford a lighter? Wouldn't 1 cigarette cost more than a box of matches anyway?

I'm so confused. I haven't even seen a match in like 10 years. When was the last time you had a box of matches?

They used to be like business cards.
People handed them out to be remembered.
It's free advertising.

You were never a smoker were you.

I always made sure I had a book or two in my car just in case my lighter died and I was fiending

Had a guy charge me five cents for one once.

How else are going to light up the cigarettes and gasoline while burning up the evidence

I thought the cigarette companies provide them to be included with purchase of a pack if requested.

They want you to set the place ablaze.

These ones are blank
Was gonna say it's free advertising. Like when McDonald's give you a free fridge magnet so you can be reminded of them whenever ur hungry (how gracious) .

But if they are blank... No idea

I think it's just something that never went away from the era of smoking being cool. Back when you could smoke anywhere even airplanes

Bro I constantly ask for matches. I tuck them everywhere too, I always accidentally give my lighter away.

A lot of the time the companies that distribute cigarettes will give you the stores free matches with branding on them. Even when they don't, the matches cost less than a penny per unit, so the consequence of giving a few out a day that don't pair with sales is minimal. I worked at a shop in an area with a ton of homeless when I was a kid, you give these guys matches whenever the ask, and whenever they have money, they come to you for their cheap tobacco. In the end it works out.

Or if you forgot all 3 of your lighters at home and don’t feel like buying another one.
