I've been watching some BS on the news about protests in Portland.

Obviously, most of the media portrays this organization as nothing short of the Aryan nations, but it's impossible to get the truth out of main stream news these days. I looked them up on Wikipedia, and they seem less extreme than what the media portrays them as, but even Wikipedia is extremely biased. I'm not about to look them up on a right wing news source because it will just be complete horseshit too. It sucks that we live in a world where you just can't look some political stuff up and get a straight answer.

Who or what are the proud boys? I'm not looking for any sort of debate. Just factual unbiased information. Can anyone direct me to a legit source without a dog in the fight?

Well, that's what threw me off initially. People in one video where holding up signs that say stuff like "go home Nazis," but several members of the far right group that they were counter-protesting weren't white. They looked like a bunch of outlaw bikers and vets waving American flags to me. Like maybe some type of extreme nationalist group or something.

I think it is basically that, but they are probably 99% white guys. Some people just wanna look for a fight: if you are a lefty join Antifa, if conservative join Proud Boys. Most of the accusations of racism, fascism, and communism are just hyperbole being thrown out by dummies.

They’re just another useful idiot protest organization, Antifa with different signs. They’re bound by soft white supremacist notions, social media driven political empowerment and rudderless existence. These people can be pushed to violence if worked up, we saw it with that idiot who plowed into the crowd and killed a woman a couple years ago. He might not have been a proud boy member, but he was definitely aligned with the same sort of groups on the right.

These people aren’t inherently violent though, they’re softer in their ideology and actions, it’s more a group that shares memes daily and then walks in the park together from time to time.

Yeah, the media is really keen to paint them and other right-wing groups (like the Three Percenters) with the same brush as actual extremist white supremacy groups who were also there (i.e. The Daily Stormers). However, since Gavin disowned The Proud Boys, they've increasingly steered into their most extremist tendencies, and since they organized this protest, they have to own that.

The FBI has made it clear they don't assess any meaningful threat from the Proud Boys, and at worst, those guys share quite a few political beliefs with groups that are genuinely white nationalist, but they are not white nationalists themselves-- at least not yet. They're not like The Daily Stormers or Heimbach's now-defunct Traditionalist Worker Party, but with events like this, there is going to be increasing in-linking and crossover. They are not headed in the right direction, and the first poster nailed it when he said they're becoming the right-handed version of #antifa rather than remaining above and morally superior to that group. The Oath Keepers were wise to stay away.

All that being said the group the FBI probably takes the most seriously is The Three Percenters. These are the kinds of groups that showed up to the Bundy protests and assumed sniper positions because they like to play toy soldier (another was Patriot Prayer). Homegrown pro-militia groups like that are the ones the FBI assesses as having the highest level of threat in the present day; above even most white supremacist groups like The Daily Stormers.

Any smart right-winger would stay away, and just let #antifa continue to toxify their own brand of politics with their outrageous behavior.
