Not necessarily their motivation to become a hero, but more the origin of their powers and abilities.

Do you like Superman's where he's from another planet?

Or people who are just born with powers and have to learn how to control them, ala the X-Men?

Or a lab accident like the hulk?

Or an intentional experiment like Captain America?

My favorite is when they have no powers, and they have to train themselves. Like Batman. People say his super power is money, but I think it's obsession. The money gets him gadgets but his hand to hand training, him sharpening his mind to become the world's greatest detective, and his infamous "prep time" super power are all a result of his super human ability to be obsessed with his goal.

Popeye. Dude gets a huge boost from eating well presumably due to prior malnutrition while sailing.

Nothing like an origin story that strongly promotes good clean living.

I've always really liked the Batman type characters. Training and dedication turning them into engines of destruction and justice!
Then I realized that all the dudes in the UFC train like crazy and half of them lose every time there's a fight. I tried to catch a spider in the radioactive material storage area.....that didn't pan out. In my twenty years of service, no one asked me to volunteer for any secret program that would transform me into America's secret weapon. Obviously puberty didn't trigger any mutant abilities. My last hope is an alien artifact searches me out to bestow awesome cosmic powers.

For me, it's the Silver Surfer. He sacrificed his life and everything he knew and loved to save his entire planet from being devoured by Galactus. He had no memory of who he was, or the woman he loved. Basically gave up his entire existence as he knew it.

It's probably the best one if it wasn't for Squirrel Girl.

Didn't she eat nuts or something........

I think she is just a mutant amd was born that way.

Which is depressing. You could have shot lasers out of your eyes, controlled the weather, ran super fast, been a telepath, but you were born with the power to communicate with squirrels.

I suppose, in the end, it's worked out well for her, considering list of superpowered beings she's beaten in one on one battles.
