Which do you guys think would be best to start first? Went to serra's place a few yrs ago for intro classes and I really enjoyed it but never signed up. I'm in decent shape, did a duathlon in central park last month (4 miles running, 12 biking) in an hour and 26 minutes. Anyone know a good boxing place in queens ny?

I would learn ground game first. I think knowing that you don't have to worry if it goes to the ground make you a much more confident striker.

you are asking this in the grappling forum.... what kind of answers do you expect?

take up boxing so you can learn to fight like a man, not this ground hugging shit

I personally would grapple first... but I guess that's why I post in the grappling forum.

The real answer is to do whichever one your more passionate about first, and then see where you want to go after a year or two of experience. Try both before you make a decision or your doing yourself a disservice.

That being said... Royce vs Art Jimmerson UFC 1

Haha, grappling of course. Real reason; You can get pretty good at striking in a few years, while it takes a good 5 years to be good at BJJ+having decent TDs.

Well, me personally, I would learn how to strike first. Once you get the ground game it becomes second nature. Boxing is a little harder, though. For me, though. But I'm a natural grappler, so maybe that's why boxing's not easy for me. Whatever you wanna' do, though, it's your life.

Try both and continue with the one that you have more fun with. If you enjoy it your much more likely to continue training. I started doing Muay Thai and BJJ and Fairtex SF and ended up sticking jiu jitsu because I enjoyed it much more, but I wouldn't have known that if I didn't try both.

What are your goals? MMA? Self defense? It all depends.

Also if you're in Queens and looking for BJJ, I train in Valley Stream at Budokan Martial Arts (Long Island Mixed Martial Arts Nassau County Self Defense Valley Stream Karate Lynbrook MMA Classes). Our instructor is a first degree black belt under Renzo, and we're probably closer and cheaper than Serra's (and have Muay Thai too if that's what you're interested in).

If you're interested in pure boxing, I'll ask our Muay Thai instructor for a good place in Queens. I know he boxes in Brooklyn but I don't know where. Canarsie I think.

I've been boxing since I was a toddler basically. I'm Mexican and have ties with some very successful Mexican pro boxers. BUT, I would have honestly preferred to have done jiu jitsu first. I've recently started training at Gracie Barra Countryside under professor Carlos Lemos Jr. and have discovered that I'm a natural grappler. I am very happy I started doing this martial art, it's good to know that you control where the fight takes place, whether it be in a pro fight or in the streets. But try both, whichever comes naturally to you is what you should focus on first, everything else will fall into place with good work ethic and stubbornness.

i don't think it matters but if you are planning on doing MMA, make sure you boxing coach is aware of this and adapts his style to a mma oriented style. meaning make sure everything from your stance to how you throw your punches is tailored to mma.

I know you're only asking about boxing and bjj, but ideally you should learn wrestling first. Being an amazing striker or submission artist won't mean jack if you can't wrestle. Although wrestling schools are impossible to find, so look for a sambo or judo school.

If you're interested in doing both, I'd tell you to do boxing first. One, because it will get you in fantastic shape. Despite the fact that you say you're in decent shape, combat sports are a whole different beast. Two, as much as I enjoy boxing, we've all seen what happens when a pure boxer faces a pure grappler, and it is easy to fall back on your grappling skills.

I find that even though I enjoy boxing, I probably don't take it as seriously as I should because I'm aware that I can/will take the fight to the ground, which is where I have the most experience.

If I had to do it over again, I'd start learning to box. Once I had a good start in boxing, I'd learn to grapple. Unless, of course, I could have done them together in which case I probably would have.

boxing is much harder to learn so i say start with boxing.

I boxed first for 2 years then I started Jiu-Jitsu. Personaly I would have started JJ first and then add boxing bc grappling primes your body for striking nicley IMHO

Gets you loose, and eases you into the sport

Where do you live?

Depends on your goals. Also, is time a factor? Why not do both?
