As a total Novice: Which instructor/gym would you choose and why? Which would you avoid (if any)?

Gym 1 Gracie Barra, Derby: BJJ
Sensei Patrick has achieved the rank of 5th Dan in Jujitsu, as recognised by the British Jujitsu Council and has been awarded numerous accolades from sources such as the Black Belt hall of fame and the 'Federation of hand to hand fighting' based in the Ukraine.
He is also currently working his way through the Brazilian Jiu jitsu ranks under the guidance of Braulio Estima (3 times World Brazilian Jiu jitsu Champion).

Sensei Pat actively teaches most classes at the dojo helped by other instructors who have demonstrated the necessary skills and competence to continue to deliver the highest levels of coaching and instruction. Stephen Martin (Rank - purple belt) also actively instructs students at the dojo. Stephen was crowned 2007 Blue Belt Juvenile World Champion in his weight category. In 2009, Stephen also won a silver medal at the Pan American Championships in Los Angeles and a bronze at the World Championships.

Gym 2 Dragons Academy, Derby: Kickboxing and MMA
Stefan Rowland is the Head Instructor at Dragons Academy and has been involved in Training and Teaching Martial Arts since 1986 and has been extensively featured in National Martial Arts Publications such as "Fighters" and "Combat" as well as in the local paper and radio. Stefan is a full time, fully registered and qualified Instructor and holds Black belt in kickboxing, tae-kwon do and Brithai. He is also studying Ninjutsu and holds the position of "Competition Teams Executive" for the uk for the British National Martial Arts Associations and has been awarded the coverted "BNMA Hons" Award for the services to Martial Arts.

Gym 3 Studio2000, Derby: Muay Thai
SAI'S TOTAL FIGHT RECORD, (56F, 42W, 3D, 9L, 2N/C)
BOXING, 1980-83 at Merlin and St Kitts in Derby, then later with Pat Brogan in Stoke on Trent.

KUNG-FU/KICKBOXING, 1982-84 with Gary Stringer, achieved black belt at 15yrs.

THE MUAY THAI YEARS, 1984-88, MASTER TODDY, MASTERS WOODY AND KRIN, MASTER SKEN. (gyms in Newton St, Portland Rd, Rainy city, Universe gym in Manchester)

1988-96, I trained privately twice a week with William Hilditch, Master Sken's 1st ever student. (Gym the original Studio 2000 in Bridge St, Deans Gate Manchester)

I WOULD LIKE TO STATE THIS WAS THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL PERSON I HAVE TRAINED UNDER AND WHY MY GYM IS CALLED STUDIO 2000.(now you all know where the name came from).

THAILAND, 1985, during this year I spent 6 months of it in Thailand.

The camps I trained in are in order; Sor Ploenjjit. Sor Voropin / Jitti gym, Galaxy gym, Chitlada gym, Sor Thanikul, Sitryodthong-payakaroon.

Gym 4 Bushido: BJJ, Muay Thai, Sub wrestling, MMA
Used by Dan Hardy, Paul Daley, Jim Wallhead

Ranked by many as one of the best Mixed Martial Arts gyms in England and Europe - this place is apparently amazing, but double the price of the other gyms and has 40+ minute journey time.

Main teacher, Lee Livingstone began his martial arts training in 1992. Starting with Shotokan Karate and studying Muay Thai for several years, like many was introduced to BJJ while in the early 90's watching the NHB fights (No Holds Barred Fights).

A close friend invited him to train at a submission grappling club, after this initial introduction Lee was hooked! Because of the lack of BJJ schools in the UK at that time, he travelled to the US, California to train BJJ.

He is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown belt under Wallid Ismail. He holds Black belts in Judo under Chiaki Ishii, Chun Kuk Do under Chuck Norris, Taekwondo under Branko Cikatic and Karate under Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Lee currently trains under Romero "Jacare

im from derby myself and currently train at gracie barra derby.
sensei pat is really nice and and amazing teacher. they have medals that only 2 other clubs in england have, and 1 that no one else in the uk have. They also teach mma classes.

ive been to sai's studio 2000 and personally, it felt like a mcdojo.
i went and did the class and they said nothing about my stance or anything (i had never trained before) and they had no technique being tought, just random punches and kicks to a bag.

ive never been to or looked into the other 2.

AVOID JON JEPSON BLACK BELT ACADAMY AT ALL COSTS DONT EVEN CONSIDER IT IF YOU SEE IT! ITS THE BIGGEST MCDOJO EVER.

Cheers for the info

Gracie Barra Derby and Bushido (in Notts) are top of my list at the moment

Maybe I'll be seeing you soon

Question regarding the Gracie Barra MMA classes:
Who teaches them?
Do you spar?
What striking do you train?

In the MMA sensei pat teaches them along with his son steve, who won the brazilian national championships.
we full contact spar once you have been going a while, and jiu jitsu spar when you first start.
You will do pad work with someone experianced on your first lesson. This is usually a guy named ben, he's really nice.

Sounds great so far!

Do you guys compete in MMA comps yet? I know you do well in the JJ comps.

I'm still not sure what striking style(s) Sensei Pat and Steve teach.
Have either of them studied anything besides Jujitsu to enable them to effectively teach striking? Muay Thai? Boxing?

Are lessons

we had 2 guys compete in a competition called 'urban knights mma' a while ago, they both won by submission in the first round.

Striking styles - we are more of a boxing place, we do learn leg kicks but sensei pat isnt really a fan of headkicks.
They used to teach kickboxing, but the classes stopped.

Your first lesson is

Strength and conditioning - we dont do strict times, but sometimes on thursdays (less people come) we will do something like circuit training, or a warm up that consists of doing lots of press ups, crunches, and other exercises. Sometimes we have to pick up a partner onto our shoulders and do numerous eversises.

I'm moving to Derby soon so have been researching a few places to train

About 2miles/20mins from Gracie Barra

Yea, that dragons kickboxing place is right next to full force gym.
You drive? because its quite a hassle getting to grace barra from full force

Nope, I don't drive

I assumed Gracie was quite easy to get to on foot/mountain bike, even though it's about 2 miles, right?

erm.... well if you go the quick way, its at the very bottom of a hill.
You have to ride through the centre of town which is quite annoying.
since all the classes are at night, i would think twice about riding or walking through town at night.

Good point, but I'm sure it'd be fine

Speaking of which, how do you get to lessons?

i walk. im from the opposite site of gracie to you. im from allestree, so its almost a straight line for me.

is this your first time in derby?

I'm pretty sure it'd be no problem. I certainly aren't going to let some possible hassle stop me from doing what I want.

I've been to Derby plenty of times, both in the daytime, and at night for parties, visiting friends, etc.

Do you have a planned route on how to get their, because without a map i cant think of a direct route. i would say it would take you about 30-40 mins ride from full force, to gracie barra.

Also you have to lock your bike up outside to a steel fence. That ben guy i was on about rides there, and thats what he does.

It's 2 miles, and pretty much a straight route down Alfreton Rd and Mansfield Rd (once you get out of the centre), so I guess about 40mins walking and 20mins or so on bike

Doesn't seem too bad

It'd probably make for nice warm-up!
