Is this not a waste of a title defense and fight? Especially since Benny is right there ready for the title shot?

It's cool Alex wants to take a stab at greatness and put his name among the BIG boys (Fedor,GSP,JBJ's) of MMA but the timing isn't really right especially considering both divisions aren't even remotely cleared.

Shit Makachev just won the belt and now he's being thrown into a "super-fight". Big pass on that.

The upside for Islam is money and easier fight.

If he beats volk everyone will just say his bigger and was no surprise. This fight is all about giving volk an opportunity and if he beats Islam it will make him a huge star for UFC. I think if, and that is a big if, he beats Islam he says at LW and vacates the other belt.

Not every fight is a referendum on someone's legacy, TS. I swear sherdoggers will complain about anything. I think Islam is one of the most talented LWs we've ever seen. But these Caucasus fanboys are insufferable.

Volk has absolutely cleared out his division (as much as a division can be cleared out) and deserves this opportunity. Apparently TS thinks Volk shouldn't get a shot a double-champ status because he's worried about Islam's legacy. At this point, Islam's reward is a fat paycheck and a high-profile fight. Legacy comes with accumulated defenses and wins over top fighters. Islam has exactly 1 win over an elite fighter..."legacy" has no business in the discussion. That will come with time.

Side note: Volk will be Islam's toughest fight to date...by a significant margin. Stylistically, he poses major problems for Islam. The main question is how the size difference will play out.

Lecagy-wise being the guy to beat prime Volk would/will go down as a huge feather in the cap for anyone, and be a big payday I imagine. And A LOT of people seem to think it would be an easy fight for Islam.

But you make good points and I pretty much agree.

Volk is not even close to clearing out his division. He’s fought Max Holloway 3 times, Brian Ortega and a washed zombie. There are 5 viable contenders at FW he can still fight, it’s a huge myth that he cleaned out the division.

That said, I don’t particularly care that they’re making islam vs Volk. It’s an ok fight I guess, personally I don’t think there’s anyone at FW that can beat Volk and there is nobody at LW that can beat islam, so might as well see them fight each other.

you can skip watching the fight....nobody cares.

The rest of us will watch this super fight.

Volk has only beat 3 different fighters as champ. He beat Holloway 2x as champ which is his only elite win. Neither Ortega or Zombie had any business fighting for the title. Aldo beat Zombie 9 years ago in a title fight for reference. Ortega lost to Holloway, beat Zombie and was immediately given another title shot. This idea that Volk has "cleaned out" the division is ridiculous.

The upside is they get paid very well for a low-risk fight.

It's not an important fight... but a W here looks good on either fighters' resume

For Islam - in theory it's a low risk fight, and looks good when looking back on a long career. Turning away a FW champ who's trying for 2nd title is better than defending against a lower ranked LW i'd say

For Volk - a W here would be huge for his career, but either way he gets to headline in a big event without risking his FW belt

Just a way to duck dangerous top contenders who can beat them in Emmett and Dariush for a "super fight" because neither are that marketable

Two things:
1. Money. Fighting a fellow champion is likely more lucrative than fighting a Benny.

2. Based on what I remember from the interviews, Makachev's perspective appears to be different than yours. Makachev seems to be reacting in a way where he was called out by a fellow top competitor that is worthy enough of getting a beat down.

Based on what I can interpret from your viewpoint, it seems that you don't think Volk is worthy. That's a big difference that you might want to consider. Even though you might not think Volk is worthy enough, the champs mights have an entirely different view.

That being said his team has acknowledged Benny and mentioned he'd be a good choice too.

What a pointless fight. Volk has nothing to lose and Islam has nothing to gain.
Longest active win streak, number one P4P, more broadly the reputational harm if Islam straight runs over him with contemptuous ease, there could be also be financial implications over any future contract negotiations, coming off a loss regardless of weight class doesn't strengthen his hand. To suggest Volk has literally nothing to lose here is disingenuous.
