What's the right way to spell Jiu-jitsu?

I see so many variations of this word, that it would make Kaddafi jealous.

Is it...

Ju-jutsu

Jujutsu

Jiujitsu

Jiu-jutsu

Ju-jitsu

etc...


I understand that derives from another alphabet different from the roman letters we're writing with, therefor maybe there is no correct way to write it with roman letters? But isn't there a standard spelling?

Jiu-Jitsu is what you use when referring to BJJ, the other stuff has a million different spelling but BJJ is ALWAYS Jiu-Jitsu

I think it depends on what are you referring

Since it was created in Brazil then its Zhoo zhitsu.

The original word is jujutsu.

The way Americans call it, its Brazilian jiu jitsu.

The short answer without getting into Hepburn Romanization vs Others.

Jujutsu - Used to refer to Ko-ryu Japanese Jujutsu
Jujitsu - Used for a more Americanized Japanese Jujitsu (usually Judo/Aikido dervived)
Jiu-Jitsu - BJJ / Modern Sport Jiu Jitsu

There is NO correct way of spelling it. It's all transliteration and there isn't a "correct" way of doing it. It's just an attempt at being phonetically right.

There is no standard way, it varies by region and time.

I've always seen BJJ spelled as jiu-jitsu. The Japanese sort is usually jujitsu or jujutsu.

Frankly it doesn't matter too much, especially since BJJ isn't even based on JJJ in the first place

Does anyone have a clip of a Japanese guy saying Jiu-Jitsu real slow. Obviously, the "jiu" part can be spelled many different ways (ju, joo, jew, jyu), but its the "Jitsu" part that seems to be the problem. Is it a sound thats somewhere in between "I" and "U" and thats why sometimes it was transliterated as "jutsu"?
