Whats the point of weigh-ins if....

Whats the point of weigh-ins if fighters just balloon back up to their walk-around weight? Or at least go back up by 10 or even 20-30 lbs after the weigh-ins?
Also how is that different from somebody "missing weight" by being over a few pounds if both fighters will just go back up??
 
What do you suggest instead

Day-of weigh ins. Weigh in like 30 minutes before you fight. Then the 'weigh in' actually makes sense. Weighing in 24 hours ahead of time doesn't actually tell the audience anything about what you weigh, which is the whole point of a weigh in. Hence the name.

Because the amount of weight that a fighter cuts varies A LOT.

Its not as if, for example, all welterweights weigh 190 lbs when they step into the cage. Some will be there, but many others will be 5 - 10 pounds lighter, and of course we know there are fighters who dont like to cut much weight.
 
It's a little bit of a silly balance. If you weighed in 30 minutes before the fight, you'd have more people getting hurt when fighting while dehydrated. Some of it is currently just part of the game, how well can you weight cut the day before? Does size really make that much of a difference, or is it better to feel comfortable the day of the fight?

Plus marketing. The UFC loves using weigh-ins as a day before hype for their events.

It's dangerous. If someone is 15 pounds over they won't just not fight, they'll dehydrate themselves... and if you put in a hydration test you will end up cancelling probably 25% of fights.

It's just not practical at all.
 
So we shouldn't have any divisions? How do we define the champions?

I see where TS is coming from.

Fighters should be categorized by the eyeball test since the scale is such a poor representation of size, Dana ought to line up the entire UFC roster in front of a bunch of sherdog blackbelts and have them sort out who belongs in which weight class.

This way we could get guys like Jon Jones in HW where they really belong and have guys like Dan Henderson just go ahead and fight at wherever he feels like, it's not his fault he's too old to cut the weight.

Random weight tests like 1 month before fights.

And what about all the people who pay $500 for a ticket and then get both the main event and co main event scrapped the day of the fights?
 
The point of weigh-ins is to restrict weight differences between competitors to within a limited range so as to provide a more level playing field. The current system does that. I don't see the problem.

Guys would just cut the same amount and come into the fight emaciated.

Why are so many people feeding this troll thread?
 
It's stupid the way they do it at present, I'm sure the strain it puts on the body shortens the fighters careers and often leads to boring fights where they gas too early. It would benefit everyone if they banned weight cutting. Maybe make the fighters weigh in the day before and when they step into the cage. Ensure that the two weights are within a small percentage of each other.

You don't really understand the point of the weight in. It has nothing to do with the audience.
