With all due respect to the Boogie Down, I don't think this is good advice for a first timer here. For somebody that will be visiting for a week or more? Absolutely sound advice there. But TS will only be here for 2 or 3 days. I don't know where TS is from probably not even from this country. So that would be like someone going to the Netherlands for the first time, but doesn't go to Amsterdam because the locals and say it's all tourists. Although their vacation could be authentic they would regret it afterwards for not experiencing one of the most popular places in the world.

I think what the TS is saying is he doesn't want to LOOK like a tourist. I could be wrong though.

Here is one thing I have done, and with I could do again.

Rent a car a just joyride around especially at night. The skyline at night is just amazing. Drive through many different areas and just get lost, and use your instinct. You can check out all the different nabes at night when no one is around, and really get a feel for the place.

And dont just stay in NYC. The highway system in the whole metro is just amazing especially in NJ at night when all the lights are on. Just bring one of those dust masks the contruction workers wear. Seeing all those lights at night feels like you are in Tron Legacy. Turn up the radio, and you will have a blast.

I have been all over the metro already, and need a new place to joyride. Any recommendations?

what's the meatpacking district like?

You had mentioned in the OP that you want to go to clubs. What type of music do you like? If you're into electronic music there is good club called Cielo on Little West 12th St (in the Meat Packing District.) The best night to go is Thursday and its cheap to get in. But for the rest of the area I will agree that its expensive and trendy now.

Dangerfield's comedy club, it's amazing to be in a place where so many legends got their start you can just feel the history. You get your money's worth too. The show started about 9 and we left at almost 5. The crowd started trickling out about 2 or 3 and it wound up the comedians coming back up and performing for about 8 of us by the end it was like we were just all hanging out talking it was a blast.
