I have a bit of a dilemma. I recently put my car (Mitsu Lancer Evo VIII) up for sale on craigslist because it is not running and I didn't have time to fix it. I've been getting a lot of offers for the car, the one most appealing is to trade it for a 99 Porsche Boxster S. The car is nice and in good condition and relatively low mileage for 99, but I'm just not sure if I really want to sell the car anymore.

To give you an idea why its so hard for me to sell, I'll just give a little background. I have owned the car for 5 years now. The car is an absolute beast to drive and is the most fun I've ever had while driving in any vehicle. I've put about 10k into the car in additional modifications. I've put so much of my own time and effort into working on the car. I've taken it to the race track and it was one of the most awesome experiences I've ever had.

The hard part is that the car doesn't run right now. It needs a bit of work. There is probably a few thousand worth of repairs that need it to get in perfect condition again.

Its hard not to just want to trade it and have a perfectly working car right away. But I'm having a hard time making a decision.

So what would you guys do in this situation?

Cliffs:

Love my car but it doesn't run
Put it up for sale but not sure if I actually want to sell it
Trade my Evo VIII for a Porsche Boxster

porsche boxster is a girly car... my crazy 50 yr old aunt who is divorced 2 times drives one... I would try and find a little pos car that runs decent to get you from point a to point b while you work on your car. what my friend did when the idiot blew out the engine to his M3. bought a chevy S10 for about $1500 and fixed his M3 and he now keeps the M3 for the weekends.

Do they know it doesn't work?

And if so... what's wrong with the Porsche?

TS, Start this video about a minute in.
When you are done, you will know what you want to do.

I think this is probably what I will do. Just get a cheap car for now.

This sounds like the best option to me

That way you get to keep the beast and still be able to get around town

The Evo would probably munch a boxster performance wise as well

^ I saw what you did there...as to TS...fix your car...10k in mods is peanuts...obviously you used the wrong tuner...

If the cost for repairs exceed the depreciation of your vehicle, you get a new car. Simple. And don’t book it, they don’t know dick about value, go through your regions local auctions.

You're not obligated to sell it just because you put it up on CL. Don't sell it if you don't want to.

Trade your car for the boxster, trade the boxster for a mazda miata. Then trade the miata for a unicorn

obviously you like working on cars....but at the same time....you get no return whatsoever by putting money into a newer japanese car. if you trade it in for example, you won't get a dollar more just because you've done a bunch of crap to it.
dealers look at that like "oh look at this fucking thing how am i going to sell this".

your other option is to put it on craigslist and get effed in the A....someone pays $2500 for the whole thing. People don't like to buy cars that are already 'modded out' unless they are extremely cheap...otherwise why would they pay a bunch of money on a car that the owner obviously beat the shit out of to the point that it doesn't run anymore, when they can do it themselves.

my advice - sell that POS and get whatever you can for it, buy a good running vehicle that will get you around, and restore an old car. if you play your cards right, you will get money back if you ever decide to sell. it doesn't have to be american muscle - I fixed up a VW Karminn Ghia one year and it was an absolute blast and a real head turner.

end result - you'll be satisfying your desire to work on cars and at the end, you'll have something of value rather than a $15,000 paper weight.

can you tell i was into imports when i was younger hehe.

I'd say it depends mainly on how long you think it will be until you'll have money to fix your car and how much you need a working car at the moment. Do you have any other transportation?

If you think you'll have it within the next few months then just wait because it sounds like your car is a whole lot sweeter but if you don't think you'll have the $ in the foreseeable future it might be better to move on.

What's the bluebook on the Porsche?

Yea I dont really need transportation at the moment. If I ever need a second car I can probably afford one while I work on fixing this one.

I think bluebook on the Porsche is a little over 9000 which is what I was planning to give the Evo away for. But clean Evo's are selling for 15000 here so Im not sure if Im selling myself short there because while it needs work its not a piece of junk. So I think I am going to delete the ad and just take it to the dealer so they can run a complete inspection on it and see how much it will cost. I'll probably just end up doing all the repairs myself if it doesn't involve anything too complex.

2500 for an evo? A used engine alone costs that much.

2500 for a car that's been dogged, "modded" and with a blown motor. And that's all that TS has said is wrong so far. If its like any other Mitsubishi its falling apart as well.

I know just what you're going through- right now I'm on the couch and pretty hungry. The problem is I'm comfortable and there's not a lot to eat in the fridge atm
