What traits make someone a counter striker and is it a mental thing too ya think?

Always felt the counter striker was a secondary form of offense in response to a striker who was faster than the opponent.

Patience and reaction time are big ones. Speed also.

And reading your opponent too. You watch someone like Izzy, actually all the CKB boys, they throw feints early to see how the opponent reacts. They try to get a gauge as to how the opponent will react to strikes and plan follow up attacks once they throw the strike for real.

Anderson was big on countering, too.

Gotta have the defensive movement and speed to avoid getting hit, allowing you to exploit opponent openings after they throw.

Would Anderson speed not translate to being more aggressive and throwing first?

letting your partner make the first move. baiting. feinting . getting them to move so you can react or moving so they throw or react. all technical fighting takes brain power its a chess game and technique works. you can make it a brawl and just start winging punches but if the technical guy stays composed he'll win every time.

Footwork is very important. You make your opponent miss and you hit him same time.
Guys who just punch back are not counter strikers imho.

People who master knife fighting understand counter striking deeply because you should not block blade with
your hands and you dont want to try blocking with your knife neither because you cant cover much with it.

I ran through a Home Depot striking every object that qualifies as a counter!
This thread was fun!

Those CKB boys aren't really counter strikers though. They're for sure amazing at feinting but they tend to throw first even if they're backing up. Even Izzy isn't a counter striker despite having a great counter left hook he just doesn't like to wade forward. Instead of countering he usually just dips the hell away.

Yeah fair enough, I'm no striking expert let that be said ha ha
