I'm getting a set of bag gloves to hit a heavy bag. I'm looking at Rivals. Rivalboxing has the regular fitness ones, and the mexican style ones.

I know the mexican style ones are lighter, and have an open thumb, can someone break down for me the difference as to when you'd use one over the other?

Ok, bag gloves fall into several different styles.

Traditional: or sometimes referred to as "old school" bag gloves that are usually 6oz. to 8oz. in weight, and the sizing usually goes S,M,L, or XL, and fit is generally based upon your hand size. They are slip on, with an elastic wrist closure, lighter and less padded than Super Bag Gloves, and can be with unpadded thumbs or thumbless. Thumbless aid in practicing Thai "clinch" movements on the bag, however, some people avoid thumbless, because there is no protection to the thumb, in the event of a misthrown punch. Some people like these gloves because they say it helps aid proper punching technique by allowing people to feel when they are striking on the first two fist knuckles.

There are also traditional bag gloves that have the additional wrist support of a wrap around hook and loop velcro strap, can be thumbed or thumbless. Those are the type Rival refers to as Mexican style. But Fairtex in Thailand makes really nice versions of those, so I am not sure where Rival got the Mexican style moniker that they use in the ad.

Super Bag Gloves: These look like boxing gloves with wrap around hook and loop velcro strap closure. They are designed with padding composition and firmness that is best suited to maximum hand protection, and generally available in 12oz. or 14oz., but that can vary. They offer better hand protection, and wrist support.

The Rival Fitness Boxing Gloves are "synthetic" leather, which most people tend to really avoid in favor of genuine leather.

Rival's Ultra Bag Gloves (RB1) are synthetic as well.

Is there an advantage to using bag gloves on a bag over a second pair of 16 oz sparring gloves (that would be dedicated to bag use)?

I love when ECS breaks it down. Great description.

Typically a mexican style glove will have a longer cuff

ALso look at what the other posters have said. You want a glove that is made for bag work. My favorite bag glove is the Ringside IMF TECH bag glove

I recently got this and I'm loving it.
