You get a 50% raise, and your only job duties are to show up on time, walk into a cell with no possessions, and sit there alone for 8 hours every day.

You're not allowed to sleep. They have cameras to make sure.

You're not allowed to bring books, phone, or anything to entertain or occupy yourself.

Your job is to literally sit there and think. Or not think. That part is up to you.

Could you do it?

No I wouldn't do that. Time would drag and it would be horrible. My current job is fun and I wouldn't last at your job OP

I see the guys doing traffic control in construction zones and I feel that day must drag on slow. I couldn't do that job either

Can I bring a radio, pencil, paper, or crayons

I sit in a little box and drive around generally on my own and pull a few levers .

Not that hard .
When I was a bus driver I would often, on an early morning or late evening winter route for instance, just drive an empty bus in the dark along deserted roads for some time. I did ask myself, if you were offered double pay to just go and sit in the driver's seat of a bus in the car park for the same amount of time, would you do it? Triple? And of course, I wouldn't. You'd start going crazy. It was an absurd job at those times though.

Do you think it's someone's job to just do traffic control entire shifts, or they rotate it every few hours perhaps.

I could do it but i would just schedule my sleep in those 8 hours. 8 hours of just sitting around without any entertainment is gonna be tough.

Edit

No if i cant sleep i would go insane just sitting around for 8 hours every day.

I had the capability to do it, not sure these days.

One of the crappiest guard posts I had was in a tower that overlooked a field and some warehouses that stored demo (C-4, det cord, blasting caps, etc...) for the engineers. The cab/watchroom for the tower was 16 square feet, which you had to stay in, other than to take a leak.

The OODs did random checks to make our lives miserable. Your only other contacts were hourly checks to report your post.

Worse the sentries would jerk off in the cab, so I just stood in the center of it. One side had a drawn bullseye target that was spackled, but the whole box was peppered.

It was 8 hours on/12 hours off, for four weeks.
