I'm not sure most people understand just how ill Brock was during that time period...

On October 2, Lesnar pulled out of his Carwin bout due to an illness. UFC President Dana White said Lesnar had been ill for three weeks, claiming he had never been this sick in his life and that it would take him a while to recover, therefore his fight with Carwin was rescheduled for UFC 108 on January 2, 2010. Lesnar initially sought treatment in Canada, but later told reporters that he had received "Third World treatment" at a hospital in Brandon, Manitoba and that seeking better treatment in the United States saved his life. Lesnar went on to criticize Canadian health care further and stated that he shared his experience to speak "on the behalf of the doctors in the United States that don't want health care reform to happen".

On November 4, it was confirmed that Lesnar had mononucleosis and that his bout with Carwin would have to wait a bit longer and the fight for Lesnar's heavyweight championship was canceled. On November 14 at the UFC 105 post-fight conference, White stated, "[Lesnar]'s not well and he's not going to be getting well anytime soon" and that an interim title match might need to be set up. In addition to mononucleosis, it was revealed that he had developed a serious case of diverticulitis, an intestinal disorder, which required surgery. After further diagnosis, Lesnar underwent surgery on November 16 to close a perforation in his intestine that had been leaking fecal matter into his abdomen, causing pain, abscesses and overtaxing his immune system to the point that he contracted mononucleosis. From the level of damage to Lesnar's system, the surgeon estimated that the intestinal condition had been ongoing for around a year.

That shit is crazy to me. That means that Brock had fought and defeated Randy Couture and Frank Mir with a hole in his intestine and literal shit leaking into his torso.

He manages to beat Carwin, a great, gutsy performance... which IMO really used up all the remaining strength his body had to keep fighting and taking damage. Then he fights and loses to Cain, in a lackluster effort that really wasn't close to his showings in previous fights... and a few months later...

Lesnar was advertised as a coach of The Ultimate Fighter Season 13, opposite Junior dos Santos, with the two expected to fight on June 11 at UFC 131, but he was struck with another bout of diverticulitis and had to withdraw from the fight on May 12. He was replaced by Shane Carwin, who ended up losing against dos Santos. Lesnar underwent surgery on May 27 to help battle his problems with diverticulitis. White said that he had a 12-inch piece of his colon removed.

So he very possibly could have went into that fight sick again, and/or re-opened the wound during the fight. But his fighting career at that point was pretty much over, his body just could not take the punishment anymore.

I honestly have no clue exactly how things would have gone had he not gotten so sick, but I do think he would have held the title multiple times... he was just such a strong athletic freak and his skills would have only improved with each fight. I think a lot of the "he didn't like to get hit" was kind of overblown, and in part due to the state he was in at the time. The dude fucking got mashed up by Carwin for a round, didn't quit and finished him, and signed up to fight other guys with extremely good striking... never ducking anyone.

What do you all think?

WAR BROCK!!!!

He get's grizzlied by Cain either way.

I think so as well, but I think he has a very good chance of beating JDS. IDK about Ubereem tho, he would have to get him down and keep him there. But those 2 are really the only ones I can think of that Brock would 100% have serious problems with

He was an undoubted physical freak, probably no one even comes close. He put himself out there, And what he achieved was pretty incredible in many ways.

But he just didn’t seem to cope with getting hit, or an opponent that wouldn’t fold under his pressure, and pressured him back. That said, Cain’s win over him actually showed how great a prime Cain really was. Brock was no joke, but Velazquez mauls any version of him. JDS vs Brock would have been a great fight too.

Can you point to examples of this during fights Brock wasn't medically compromised? Did he fold while getting mashed by Carwin? Why would he have agreed to fight Carwin, or JDS, or Ubereem, or Hunt... all known for striking and power... if he was "afraid"? Is it folding if your body cannot give you what you are asking from it?

I never said he was ‘afraid’, I said quite the opposite. And he looked good in the Cain fight for a couple minutes, until he just wilted under Cain’s pressure. The Reem fight is the only one where he looked truly compromised.

I wonder what could have contributed to that

I dont think it's much different. He would have had more fights but his reaction to getting rocked was probably never gonna get better, and that's a coin flip. Cos most HW's can bang.

One of the big questions.

Watch the staredowns at UFC 100 and UFC 116. A year apart but Lesnar looks five years older. His youthful energy is gone.

Critical illness is very difficult to ever truly recover from, and to say it exacts a toll is an understatement. When we are looking at peak athletic performance versus peers, any drop off is very costly.

Lesnar never developed any further after UFC 100, could barely train, got seriously sick again, retired, went back to pro wrestling, sat out for five years and then handled a ranked HW.

He probably would've had a better showing against Overeem. He looked like he had one foot out the door during that fight and was just fulfilling an obligation. Very low energy.

Probably the same for the most part, though. He was always gonna lose to Cain. Maybe he beats JDS and gets a rematch, but he probably would've run into the same problems he did in the first fight. I don't think Brock was ever in it for the long haul, so his career probably ends similarly even without getting sick. A few losses near the top and he was gone.

Doesn't change the fact he reacted to getting hit worse than my toddler does.

So Brock would have been healthy enough to grift another main event or 2 and then retired.

I think it all goes down pretty much the same as it did.
You have respect the guy, he was a multi-millionaire before ever stepping into the octagon. He didn't do it for the money, although I'm sure he got paid well, he did it to test himself. Overall he did pretty good.
