Just wondering what exactly a significant strike is? Does it carry more weight in terms of judging than just a regular strike. I would appreciate some input on this.
Thanks

My definition would be- a strike that is purposely thrown that connects flush and hard enough on the head or abdomen area to cause at least some negative physical effects to the targeted fighter.

It is a strike that is landed at a distance, not in a clinch. That is how they determine a significant strike because usually it is a strike from a distance that knocks an opponent out.

A strike landing from distance. Evidence shows almost all of significant strikes are landed at a distance.

A clean strike.

The amount of force that was behind the strike dictates the value of how significant or effective it was.

Exactly where I got my information from. He also said that FightMetric kind of made that definition, no?

I don't know if they made that definition per se, but that is how FightMetric determines a significant strike.

Which is stupid, because under that definition a jab is a significant strike, when it's really not in most cases.

A strike that lands close to flush (clean, not blocked) and has decent force behind it.

FightMetric defines them as strikes that reach full extension, so when you see them on a UFC broadcast, that's what's being referenced.
"significant strikes refer to all strikes at distance and power strikes in the clinch and on the ground. It does not include small, short strikes in the clinch and on the ground. Those will be included in the Total Strikes category."

There are no degrees of significance; a strike either is significant or it isn't.

Makes me think of the Diaz/Condit fight. How effective or significant can a strike be when you are immediately running in the opposite direction?

So I'd assume the fighter with more significant strikes would hold an edge in the effective striking if the fight went to a decision

My problem with that is, say the Silva Ftanklin 1 fight, muay thai knees are a significant strike. From the clinch.
