People won't even bother reading this before they post. I know it means regardless of weightclass, who is the best. But what does "pound for pound" mean? Is it just a nonsense phrase people threw together, like how all useless sports jargon comes into common parlance?

Well, its a term that means "Everyone get on sherdog.com and ignore arguments, and instead just yell at walls"

It means 'direct comparison.'

If you're asking who the first person was to use it, I couldn't tell you. I imagine it was a savvy marketing promoter.

I'm confused.

You know what it means but you're asking what it means?

Little ceasars is dollar for dollar the best pizza around

Yes. I'm asking what the phrase "POUND FOR POUND" means, not the definition. Like touchdown, or homerun. I know what they refer to, but I have no idea what the phrase means.

touch down means they are touching down in the endzone. home run means they are hitting the ball out of the field thus allowing them to Run to Home plate.

It means one pound for one pound. That is, you take one pound of a heavyweight (in terms of their relative talent) and do the same for a lightweight (or whatever class you want) and compare who has more talent respectively in that pound. It's basically like saying you divided by their weight or created a "talent index" of how good they are.

Simplifying the above, it means what you said: Who is the best if you get rid of their weight advantage/disadvantage.

Generally, I take it to mean "if everyone were the same size". Pound for pound means I know that there are guys who are way bigger, but if you took a fighter's prowess divided it by his weight then multiplied by some constant(say 185) who would he beat? Is he pound for pound better than every other fighter on the planet if the same conversion was performed and they met at 185. Might just be my interpretation, but that's what I always envisioned.

It means a fan has maxed out their ability to analyze actual matchups and styles in the real world, and so they hyper-focus on the simplest difference fighters have - their weight - and get lost in absurd hypotheticals.

I always thought of it as decided by the fighters dominance in his own weightclass

it means amount of skill per pound. A completely subjective weighting/ranking system.

How do I close this topic? I knew it was going to just be people ignoring the post and explaining the term pound for pound to me.

You should close your account asking questions like these in the first place

OK.

Pound for pound is supposed to mean:

The best fighter when all considerations of weight are removed.

For example, which fighter is so skilled, he would beat any other fighter in the world if they were the same size.

It's an incredibly flawed concept that cannot be honestly applied, because fighters at different weight classes leverage their size and speed differently; guessing the skills of a fighter from one weight class to another is absolutely impossible. If Anderson Silva was 20 pounds lighter, maybe he wouldn't have the power he has now and would struggle to knock people out; if he was 20 pounds heavier, maybe he wouldn't have the speed he has now to connect with his power.

The most practical application of pound for pound is probably to just consider the most skilled fighters in the world; this is probably why heavyweight so rarely make the list (virtually never).

I sincerely have no idea what you want from us.

You appear to be asking some vague question, but damned if I know what it is.

lol, i think a large part of the problem is you using the words means and definition as if they're supposed to carry two different connotations. they don't, so this phrase and your original question make no fucking sense.
