I know my name is BJJguy2016 but I have just taken a class in judo after a few years of bjj and honestly I don't know why i didn't try this years ago it is such a beautiful martial art and so much more fun than BJJ in my opinion. was just wanting to know other peoples opinions.

Thank you :D

I prefer BJJ as I feel it's more gratifying overall (to me at least) with all the guards you can do. I also like to spar on my butt so maybe I'm just lazy lol.

That said, hitting a clean uchimata in randori is hard to top and is addicting af.

If you're making that call after one class of anything, you're either trolling or stupid.

BJJ is way more fun than Judo. Reason being, you can go to BJJ, roll hard, and not feel like you got hit by a car the next morning. Judo is extremely hard on the body, of the three grappling arts I've spent any time practicing (wrestling, Judo, and BJJ) it's definitely the worst. Plus BJJ still allows for different styles, the rules of Judo that have been instituted the last few years have led to everyone having very similar styles which I find boring. Different partners in BJJ will present different challenges, Judo is pretty much 'are you a drop seio nage guy or an uchi mata guy'. I find BJJ and wrestling more fun than Judo these days.

Seconded, I love judo/sambo but rarely train anymore due to the toll it took on my body. Also to the second point you made, no two rolls are ever the same. I love solving puzzles different paethers present

I prefer judo myself. Personally I find throws a lot more satisfying than anything else.

Yes, BJJ by a mile. BJJ is more enjoyable than any other combat sport.

I did a bunch of kick boxing last night and feel exactly like I got hit by a car.

I think I hate Judo. I like watching it for the cringe factor, but I hate doing jacket wrestling. I enjoy stand up submission wrestling.

Standing with the jacket has that combination of extra dangerous and extra aggravating that puts me off. Sure, submission grappling while starting on your feet has the potential for dangerous spaz, but usually people can contain themselves during in house rolls.

both. why be monogamous?

sometimes you wanna make love, that's BJJ

sometimes you wanna fuck, that's Judo

you can't fuck every day or someone won't be able to walk.

old people make love when they can't fuck anymore.

both are better than working out by yourself. That's jerking off.

Self-improvement is masturbation. Now self-destruction...that's the answer.

While I wouldn't suggest stopping bjj, occasionally attending a judo class wouldn't hurt. I love both martial arts and think they both have their pluses and minuses. Judo saved my life a few weeks ago so I'll always appreciate it. I think if you don't actually understand the minute subtly of the art and the grip fighting and the footwork you'll only ever see seio nage vs uchi mata. Learn the art not the sport. I love the art of bjj also so I see past berimbolos and butt scooting.

story please!

Judo for me, I like stand up grappling in general to be more fun, I have a good bjj game, but I always find techniques that I have once looked past in both arts, and want to work on them. Sometimes when we (rarely) practice and spar with takedowns, it is always fun in bjj, as some of the guys shoot double legs pretty badly without any set up, or from far distance away. It is easy to perform an osoto gari then for me, which I am working on right now.

But I like both arts for what they are, I like BJJ for the extended ground work and Judo for the tachi waza and randori game. I get challenged in both classes, so it is almost equal, but I still prefer Judo as I have been engaged with it for a long time.

Both arts reflect their countries of origin, so BJJ is the more playful one.

Judo. I find throwing a lot more fun than rolling. I also don't mind getting thrown.

Judo by a mile!

Judo was my first art, I took 8 years doing striking, came back to Judo and Japanese Jujitsu and love the speed and intensity of launching your whole body leverage and weight into throws.

BJJ is cool, but lacks that high speed adrenaline rush I crave.

That said getting tossed on your ass thousands of time takes a serious tole on your body...As I look forward to hip surgery right around the corner.

another question, does judo work without the gi say like in a street fight?

Well first off there's no such thing as a "street fight". If someone want's your watch or wallet he's not going to put up his dukes and challenge you he's going to be in your space with a weapon before you understand what's happening unless U r well trained in threat assessment and situational awareness which both take time and practice to be effective at.

That's from serving in an inner city shelter as security staff for years...Just so happens one of our own was assaulted by a violent mentally ill client the other day with a sharpened fork that he didn't see in time. He's in the hospital with lacerations to the face and the guy's in a cell before the criminally violent ward.

So here on this site when you see "street fight" think school yard scuffle with at will participants for the most part.

In that setting Judo works maybe all too well.

The first few months of JR high I was reading Hardy Boy's mysteries while the bullies were making their rounds. I'd read about a Tome Nage in one of the stories and practiced the basic parts in my head. Finally I couldn't avoid being a target so after he clearly shoved me a couple of times I shoved the kid back when he responded I grabbed over his shoulder, put my knee in his center and rolled back. Short of it is he went to ER with only a broken collarbone thank god, and I went to the principles office with the stunned backing of most of the school yard he'd been shoving me first.
When my dad heard from the school, I got home and he just shook his head and said basically "If you're going to try that stuff you're going to learn it for real and the discipline and restraint that goes along with being able to hurt people so easy" So off to JR Judo classes I went!

In that security job, I used very basic throws that done on hard surfaces against people who r not trained in Ukemi and we're legally responsible for are very effective. Osoto Gari can be used to control someone's fall to the ground by using the inside leg reap as just a barrier so they can't step back and you can take them down into side control. My only experience with that is with other security around me and LEO outside the facility ready to respond with 30 second AOScene.
Sry for the long response.

I love judo. When I wrestled in HS i liked to take people down (scoring 2 for 1). I preferred freestyle to folk. Judo was that on crack. So much fun. With that said.......now there is no doubt I would rather do BJJ. It hurts to get thrown........and I am old.
