Hello,

I am about a week and half out from my bjj tournament and I need to do some weight cutting. I am competiting at 154's with a gi on. I currently weigh about 160 and need to weigh 149-150 at the weigh ins. What methods of weight cutting does anyone recommend? How should my diet and water intake be looking when I reach about the week before the competition? I have already read the FAQ's and threads about weight cutting and they were not really that helpful. Any answers would be great. I also have past experiences with weight cutting from wrestling in high school. Those were mainly using a sauna suit to sweat out the water weight.

Thank you

You should have started a while ago but basically.

Cut carbs, this will allow you to deplete muscle glycogen and some water weight.
Sweat, more water weight loss
Drink more water. Drinking more water prevents water retention
Cut water 24 hours before weigh ins, only sipping when absolutely needed.
Eat light weight foods like cliff bars and stuff of that sort.

Next time, try to stay within 5 lbs of competition weight, and it's much easier. I learned this the hard way my soph year of high school wrastlin'. Junior year, I wrestled the 150 weight class, and stayed at 155 year round to make it easier to weigh in.

put a stationary bike in the sauna.
eat nothing but cucumber for a few days.
should be solid.

thank you for all the responses.

@diet otsuka why did you pick eating cucumbers over other vegetables? water content? thanks

My trainers have always told me not to cut weight for a Jiu Jitsu competition if its that extreme since you weigh in right before you get on the mats. I did anyway though since it was only like 13 pounds. Just run a shit ton and cut your calories. I ate mostly one egg at a time and did nothing but cardio. Lost 15 lbs of water and weight combo in 3 days. Make sure when you cut you take a Pedialyte with you or something like that to rehydrate right before you do work.

Good luck!

Don't cut weight. Compete at the higher class.

First off, unless you are competing at a very high level, you will not be facing measurably better people at a 10 lb higher weight class.

Secondly, in BJJ tournaments, you weigh in a couple hours before competing. You should not be cutting at all under those circumstances unless you have done at least a couple practice drops. It's too late for that now.

Spend the time practicing, you will do better.

I'm guessing you are doing the Chicago Open? well anyway same day weigh in is a different animal. You need to have naturally lost weight versus dehydrating your self. Day before weigh in I do the gallons of water thing. same day weigh in tho, i would guess cutting carbs and sugars for the next week is the best way to start. sauna and sweat out the rest.

I'm really considering disallowing this type of thread...being a week out from competition, not knowing how you're going to make weight, and doing whatever the interwebz tells you is just a recipe for disaster.

Exhibit A:

Go to the gym and sweat. Get rid of water weight but make sure you stay hydrated. I'm sure I'm of no help as I have never needed to cut weight before. Since I'm so small, all I have to do is make weight.

If I helped, great. You're welcome. If I didn't help, best of luck, friend.

Don't do any of these things.

Here's what you do...

Call up whoever is running the tournament and ask to move up to the next weight class. As a previous poster said, your weigh in will be very close to your actual match. In some instances, like the tournament I'm competing in on March 3rd, you weigh in IMMEDIATELY before you go onto the mat.

I cut weight once, and was exhausted withing a minute of my match starting. I literally had no time to rehydrate. Since, I've fought at the next weight class up and feel much stronger.

I would just compete in the higher class instead of focusing on cutting weight. Then you can focus on your technique leading up to it instead of worrying about cutting, which i doubt would give you any sort of advantage anyway. If anything it may actually hurt your performance quite a bit if you go overboard.

thanks for all the responses!!! i decided to move up next to the next weight class instead of worrying about the weight cut. My next tourney I will focus on my dieting more so I don't have to cut a lot of weight.

On a side note, why do people cut weight for BJJ tourneys? I understand mma, boxing etc when you weigh in the day before your fight and get 24 hrs to rehydrate and come into the fight 10-15 lbs heavier. But assuming most BJJ tourneys weigh in the same day and even a few hours before competing you are just dehydrating and making yourself weak for no reason. I would just want to go into competition as strong as possible.

FWIW, most BJJ/grappling tournaments around here have weigh-ins the day before.
Cutting to make weight then going direct to the mat is a questionable move, at best.

How much are you looking to cut? I'm going to be at a march third comp as well (new orleans) and will be cutting a small bit, but I'm only going down from 207 to 202 which is an easy cut six days out. Now if you were talking about 15 pounds I'd say it's a very bad idea.

It is better to allow these threads since it gives the opportunity for saner heads prevailing.
