For me Colby Covington's entire career is one of the more disturbing sagas since I have been a fan. It's part of the reason I've stopped watching and caring about the sport so much in recent years. The fact that two world class athletes had to resort to slandering each other in the media and sucker punching in parking lots to keep their jobs really doesn't make me excited for the future. What's your take? Did the McGregor era take the UFC to the next level or ruin the product?

UFC's WWE style marketing will only get worse. Conor throwing the handcart into a bus window and it being used as a promo was enough for everyone to read the writing on the wall. If you want serious high level MMA you will not get it consistently from the UFC. We have Fight Night cards littered with nobodies. BMF belts and other nonsense. Power Slap. And tons of undeserved title shots.

UFC is dying. UFC is definitely making more money than ever. But the product has completely changed. It is no longer about the best versus the best. But the most popular versus the best. Or sometimes just the most popular versus the second most popular.

Has there any been any definitive proof substantiating what Covington has said about almost being cut being the reason he started his bullshit?

Colby was 8-1 with four finishes in the UFC before his heel turn. No way they were just going to cut him out of the blue. He was on a 5 fight win streak too.

Lambert, Colbys coach at the time is very much into WWE and said the shtick was his idea to speed things up for Colby.

basic logic bro. he didn't change anything about his fighting style, he made one outrageous comment got a lot of instagram followers and pretty much overnight was a top WW being pushed by the UFC

I believe both of these scenarios. This makes way more sense than his narrative of, “Dana was gonna cut me so I started acting like a dick!”

we don't know and frankly will never know, that's between Sean Shelby, Mick Maynard and Dana White. What we do know is Covington went from making 39 and 39 to 500,000 a show after calling Brazil a dump and Brazilians filthy animals

Lambert is the one who said he was going to be cut if he didn't do something to get attention.

"He wasn’t going to be re-signed and we had one fight left and I asked for that fight to be in Brazil against a bigger name I was fairly certain he was going to be able to beat.

"I told Colby, ‘You need to change something between now and then or you’re going to get cut.

I think over time we will find that talented fighters, including McGregor or Covington, will retain their popularity from their fighting talents on display and memorable performances rather than from any gimmick or sideshow antics. Trash talking and acting out will never have the same longevity as real world results in the cage.

Post-Maia was a solid promo actually, probably his best. Spoke without stuttering(lol) & he had great real emotion & conviction. The crowd's reaction says it all.

The amount of Colby talk on here, twitter, youtube, etc is definitely the reason he is getting a 3rd title shot. The same marks that hate him, as well as the few who love(?) him, have provided the ufc the incentive to continuously reward Colby. Fans & media alike.

Suck for the division but pretty funny in a vacuum.

It’s not impossible that he was one loss away from being cut. They cut Fitch despite him being 14-3 in the promotion and a top 5 WW
