I enjoyed watching Tyron Woodley get destroyed and dominated too, but at least in his case, Woodley is actually a great fighter who has accomplished a lot in the sport, decisively beating the previous champion and a number of excellent opponents.
Mickey Gall, meanwhile, is every bit as whiney and insufferable of a personality, only inside the cage as well as outside of it, and without the accomplishments, all while (to paraphrase Brock Lesnar) being born with a horseshoe up his ass, and routinely cheating in his fights.
Let's examine Gall's career up to now, shall we? He entered the UFC with a mere 1-0 record and a skillset of average wrestling, good BJJ, and awful striking. He fought a freaking photographer with 1 amateur fight, a loss, 7 years ago. Naturally, he beats the bum.
As a reward, he fights in the 3rd fight of a major PPV against someone even worse than that, a NON-FIGHTER in CM Punk so bad that many members of this forum who have trained martial arts and are in decent shape would kick his ass. Against a fighter whose popularity outstrips his fighting ability more than anyone in UFC history, Gall wins again.
This lucky streak can't possibly continue, right? He has to finally fight a real opponent, right?
Well, sort of. Gall fights Sage Northcutt, a real fighter and opponent, but also someone whose popularity/fame exceeded his actual fighting ability, especially then, more than anyone else outside of CM Punk. Gall's average wrestling is good enough to continually take Sage down, and when he lands a clumsy overhand right that glances off Sage's head, Sage's dreadful chin makes it a knockdown, which Gall skillfully uses to lock in a RNC.
Now at this point, is Gall thanking his lucky stars that he has won the lottery three fucking times in a row? Is he just humbled by how blessed he is? Of course not. It's the exact opposite.
He talks shit to anyone and everyone. Gall talks about how he is so fucking awesome and the future of MMA. He talks shit to Northcutt continually in the cage. (I'm no Sage fan, but he is a nice, respectful guy) He calls out Dan Hardy (?!), who is a retired commentator that can't fight again because of medical issues. He starts an imbecilic, pointless feud with Ariel Helwani, an analyst and non-fighter.
It seems like Gall is on coke in many of these interviews, a completely out of control egomaniac.
Next, he fights Randy Brown. Now, Brown is not a great fighter. However, he is the first solid UFC fighter Gall has faced, with a solid 3-2 record in the promotion and some match-up problems presented by his length. And Brown beats him, even exposing Gall's wrestling in the process, as Brown, a kickboxer who is usually at a grappling disadvantage, wins the wrestling part of the fight and takes Gall down. He exposes Gall's jits too, as Gall is surprisingly poor off his back, beating ground-and-pounded and brutally bloodied while offering little resistance.
In this same fight, Gall reveals another delightful aspect of his character. He is cheater.
He grabs Brown's gloves constantly, something Randy complains about to the refs. He also continually hooks his toes and fingers into the cage despite being repeatedly warned not to. He also throws punches after the bell sounds on at least one instance.
Is Gall chastened after this fight? Does he realize he needs to clean and sober up, take training seriously, and stop being such an arrogant jackass, especially given his lack of skills and accomplishments?
Fuck no! After an easy victory over one of the worst fighters on the UFC roster at that point, 37 year-old George Sullivan, cut after that very loss (and losing his subsequent fight outside the promotion), Gall is as arrogant as ever.
He talks shit to Diego Sanchez, a guy who, despite being weird and the beneficiary of some judging robberies, is an honorable fighter and warrior that has accomplished a fair amount in his career. About how he is going to finish him in round 1, how much better he is, etc.
Watching an old, chin-less Diego out-wrestle Gall, beat him up, and then stop him due to strikes in the second (Diego's first stoppage victory since 2008 against Luigi Fioravanti!!!) was immensely satisfying, the just desserts for an arrogant, cheating shithead without nearly enough talent to back it up.
Focus- What are similar examples you've had of enjoying watching a fighter lose?
