Was DCs weakness to body shots against Stipe a crack in the system or a one-off?

That was how Jones got him too. Kick to the body, kick to the body, then, when DC is overprotective and covering up his side, lift that foot to the head instead and knock him out.

DC always hated getting hit in the body, but I don't know that a lot of fighters got the chance to exploit it until later on.
Yes. That was the first glimpse of it

Anderson and Mir had already hurt him, which led to Jones realizing his weakness so he could set up the head kick. Which DC himself acknowledged.

Frankly it’s amazing it took Stipe so long to figure that out. Which is why I don’t consider it a great mid fight adjustment as he never should’ve needed to. No idea how you could’ve possibly missed that in prep.

Stipe isn't the only guy to hurt him to the body. It definitely seemed to be one of his weaknesses. He just usually could completely mask it with his wrestling. But against Stipe his back was already gone, and couldn't wrestle anymore. So that weakness was completely exposed.

Like others said, Anderson hurt DC pretty bad with a body kick despite it being his only real attack of the fight.

I think in the Stipe fight it was a couple of factors combined that lead to the finish. DC was clearly tiring from round 3 onwards, his was keeping his hands super high and extended to oaw at Stipe's hands and then landing strikes off the same pawing movements. Leaving his body completely exposed. The body shots hurt him and lead to the finish but it was ultimately a right to the chin that started the end. DC's hands dropped from the sustained body attack, and Stipe went high and rocked him. Like Conor being rocked by Nate, it seemed like it was more fatigue than it being a super hard shot.
I HATE when people say Stipe won the 2nd fight from body shots when he clearly wobbled DC with a head shot which led to the finish which was also all head shots.

Say they opened him up and slowed him down maybe, but that was DC getting KO’d by head shots. Not sure why it’s controversial, we all know Stipe hits hard. As evidenced by him dropping him again in the 3rd fight.

Im very curious if ufc history could have turned out differently if fighters knew that Cormier had issues with body shots. Could rumble have exposed this and we would have never seen DC make a run in the heavies?

Or was it a one-off?

Johnson should've known about it considering Silva made this weakness glaringly obvious in the fight before Rumble.

big fat man didnt take body shots well....

he was a shorter guy in nearly all his fights, so he used to fight small, surprised it took so long for someone to try and use the body against him

Everyone with that big soft belly is gonna be weak to the body.

I think it's probably because Stipe and his team made a read and switched it up tactically, arguably something he could have done earlier but they may have been waiting for DC to get tired.

But yeah, clearly finished him with a right to the chin and then a follow up barrage also to the chin.

People probably give credit to the body shots because that was the real visual indicator that the tide was turning in the fight..

Has been forever but I have vague memories of Stipe or his coaches talking about noticing this hole in DCs defenses, and capitalizing on it.

I never got the impression that it was a secret, or a fluke, just that Stipe may have focused a bit more on it in the game plan than others.

On a side note I don’t think I’ve ever seen Stipe deliver a single kick in his entire career probably owing to his Johnny Bravo like body plan.

Alot of MMA fighters dont even go to the body with strikes.

Which is why its cool to see when they do.

Aldo sinking his fist into Jeremy Stephen's body was gorgeous

Stipe has landed some calf kicks in his previous fights. They are very heavy. I would anticipate he plans to use some against Jones.

It wasn't a 1 off. DC was hating the Jones body shots

You could hurt him to the body others did.. Jones, Mir, but he was also exhausted from trying to take Stipe out.. He got Stipe out of there so easy the 1st time and by round 4 of the rematch he had this look on his face like

"What the hell are you still doing here"
