Was DCs weakness to body shots against Stipe a crack in the system or a one-off?

Im very curious if ufc history could have turned out differently if fighters knew that Cormier had issues with body shots. Could rumble have exposed this and we would have never seen DC make a run in the heavies?

Or was it a one-off?

Like others said, Anderson hurt DC pretty bad with a body kick despite it being his only real attack of the fight.

I think in the Stipe fight it was a couple of factors combined that lead to the finish. DC was clearly tiring from round 3 onwards, his was keeping his hands super high and extended to oaw at Stipe's hands and then landing strikes off the same pawing movements. Leaving his body completely exposed. The body shots hurt him and lead to the finish but it was ultimately a right to the chin that started the end. DC's hands dropped from the sustained body attack, and Stipe went high and rocked him. Like Conor being rocked by Nate, it seemed like it was more fatigue than it being a super hard shot.

Cormier was absurdly active throwing strikes in the second and third fights with Stipe. The only comparable fight in his career was the Gus fight, where Cormier was younger, lighter, and had taken considerably less total damage. Against Stipe, Cormier was particularly vulnerable to cardio-sapping body shots.

I think it was a way to get him.

He has to constantly move forward putting on pressure

That was one of the things that stopped him in his tracks a bit

Could Rumble have pulled it off?

I love how fat shaming DC is completely ok and I mean that bc for some reason it feels right with him and I'm not mean like that to anyone else, except this one guy at work I nicknamed sticky McFatfuck
I mean how can anyone not notice how big the dude got in his retirement.

Plus we gotta see him all the time.

I am a huge DC fan and everything, but he knows how ruthless the fans are, and he has chosen chicken over shame.

DC, like Ortega, has made a choice.

It was a big weakness of his IMO. Literally as soon as Stipe started attacking the body it was over a few minutes later in that 2nd fight. Most MMA fighters suck at going to the body but Jones, Stipe and Anderson had success going to the body against him. Easier said than done though, DC was an amazing fighter obviously.

Yes he didnt give that many oppurtunities to do it. Hes always coming forward throwing heat and dominated in the clinch up close

You have to wait for him to slow down later in the fight

Didn't DC noticeably wince from body shots on multiple occasions even before his fights with Jon?

I seem to recall either Mir or Barnett having at least some success with body kicks, and it becoming a topic back in the days how body shots are a glaring weakness for DC.

Edit: It was both.

DC's weakspot was his stomach. Anderson showed it. Even Fedor had some soft spots in his stomach and they are the same body.

That was how Jones got him too. Kick to the body, kick to the body, then, when DC is overprotective and covering up his side, lift that foot to the head instead and knock him out.

DC always hated getting hit in the body, but I don't know that a lot of fighters got the chance to exploit it until later on.

Cormier was soft in the middle for his entire career... Opponents were trying but Cormier was a pretty smart guy and even though fat at both weight classes, he had a lifetime of core strength and it for the most part worked.

Stipe earned his belt from a quality Champion.
