Right, but all of Italy is basically a conglomerate state right?

I mean, what's next, Florence, Piedmont, Genoa, etc. all want their own country? I ahd no idea things were so bad there that secession seems like a legit option.

Maybe the recent hoopla in Scotland, Catalonia and Crimea has lit a fire under them, perhaps theyve all been thinking about this for a long time.
If they're better off on their own I don't see the problem.

Who knows though. Historically, they each have their own history and language and whatever else.

I doubt Russia is concerned with Italy's military now either. that isn't the deterrent, NATO is.

True, NATO is there, but smaller countries can't afford proportionally a similar military. Which may erode NATO's effectiveness.

My Mexican family is from Catalan originally, and I think independence is an awful and self serving reaction. As it will not benefit anyone in Spain(as it is now nor after a split)

A vote for independence is quite a different thing than voting to join russia who coincidentally is currently occupying you and clearly wants that outcome both to save face and for strategic reasons.
