Rumored Usyk vs Wilder - IVB - YouTube - July 11th

As much of a fan as I am of usyk, I can’t defend this fight. Hes clearly fighting him for legacy as he’s (rightly or wrongly) considered one of the best of this past era. However, as the undisputed champ you shouldn’t be cherry picking any fights. And Wilder is no more deserving of a title shot right now, than the list of journeyman he chose to defend his belt against. I do stop short of wishing for a wilder win though

I didn't develop any form of antipathy towards Usyk until his entire HW run consisted of fighting 3 British fighters over and over again. And now this.

Under normal circumstances I wouldn't want him to get knocked out, particularly by Wilder. It's just the principle. If you cherry pick a washed up geriatric, then you deserve to get knocked out by that geriatric.

Sounds "interesting" at least with the surroundings. Let's see how this plays out 🤔

Hmm. Reportedly they're going to give away most of the tickets in order to try and break the world record for attendance at a boxing event. Currently, it's around 135k which was set a long time ago by Tony Zale vs Billy Pryor. They're looking to do around 150k in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza. It's an ambitious goal and all but as a foreigner from the East Usyk isn't that well-known here in the States and interest in Wilder has declined a lot over the last few years. If this really is their plan then I think that they're going about it backwards.
Imagine Usyk vs Wilder being the most attended fight in boxing history.. lol.

His heavyweight run in normal professional boxing you mean. He previously fought at heavy in a "semi-pro" league called the World Series of Boxing (WSB). Years back 6 of his fights there were counted as fully professional contests until the ABC changed them to amateur. The point is that Usyk has done more at the weight than you realize. Those guys weren't all British, either.

Honestly Uysk was starting to win me over. But now it's just clear to me that he is ducking Zhang. Instead he fights the guy he slapped unconscious.

But i get it. Wilder is the last of the big 3 names of the era uysk hasn't beaten. Maybe he will fight zhang next but I doubt it.

We're talking about semi-pro fights that became amateur now?

I think the makeup they have Usyk wearing in the promo photo above is very appropriate for this fight.

No, we're talking about 6 previous fights of his that were also at heavyweight and once counted on his professional record. He went 6-0 there before he turned "pro".
