“I was thinking about returning to cruiserweight and getting a few more of the world belts,” Usyk said in a recent interview with Parimach.

“You know, being a heavyweight means you have to be really heavy. You must eat a lot. It’s not hard to fight with these giants, but it’s really hard to eat all the time.

“And now I work much more than I did as a cruiserweight, particularly in the training camps. I had to swim ten kilometres and train hard. At this moment I just want to stop and take a rest.

“A half of a year of training is hard work. I didn’t see my family for such a long time, I didn’t see my wife, children or anyone.”

/

Since he’s been gone, the cruiserweight belts have become fragmented and are currently held by Arsen Goulamirian, Ilunga Makabu, Jai Opetaia and Lawrence Okolie.

/

Usyk and Fury both scared of each other?

Usyk and Fury both scared of each other?
Fury:
- the guy who fake retires every other month
- asked for 500 mill to fight Usyk
- barely fought when he was active
- has already rejected a couple contract offers from Usyk's team
- demands Usyk fight in December despite going straight from literal war into training for a massive fight a couple months ago
- refuses any other date & can't wait an extra 2-3 months in face of Uysk's circumstances and completely understandable request for some recovery
- got floored by steve cunningham
- has admitted shorter guys are his hardest match up
- Usyk is 10x Cunningham

But Usyk is afraid of Fury? The same guy that fights on the road every match and whoops everyone's ass and takes their belts.

How bad did Fury treat your mother?

Seems like hes just putting together and motivating himself for a back up plan if Fury flakes.
The thing is, its not always a good idea to play games with Fury. If he hears that Usyk may vacate, that route towards unification may be more appealing than fighting Usyk for it. You dont want to trigger somebody as unpredictable and as random as Fury. He will spite anyone and everything to get you back.
Pulling a take away on Fury isn't really going to end well for anybody.

not exactly the most reliable source, but here you go.

i mean, i hope it's not true... but let's not shit ourselves here. it's the fight no one wants, and exactly the type of fight fury would take, while running his mouth about how nobody wants to fight him.

Id rather him fight charr. Not that I’d bother watching that either. Hopefully he fights no one this year, so he won’t really have any where else to go other than usyk, if usyk can be ready to fight feb/March

Apparently @WklySportsMemes is the only one that read the article. Usyk potentially returning to cruiserweight is a backup plan if for some reason Fury won't fight him next year. That's all. I figure the way he sees it, if he can't become undisputed a second time (at heavyweight) he'll go back down in weight and look to do it again. There are a couple decent fights for him there in Opetaia and you could even throw Okolie in there. Another backup option that was reported if he can't get Fury in the ring is fighting AJ again but who wants that? They've already fought twice.

With that said, several insiders in the industry, like Coppinger, believe that Fury will indeed fight Usyk next year. So, I doubt we'll see Usyk make his way back down in weight. I think he'll fight Fury and then retire. The only other name that interests him at heavyweight is Wilder.

Here's the original source which is a gambling site called Parimatch. Notice that whoever conducted the interview asks Usyk about returning to cruiserweight. He wasn't even the one that brought it up.
Parimatch: “You have previously hinted about a match with Canelo, would you consider returning to cruiserweight?”
Parimatch Talks to Oleksandr Usyk: Joshua Analysis, Fury, Football & the Future

A little common sense also goes a long way. Usyk stands to make upwards of $100m against Fury next year and, if he fights Wilder, tens of millions there. Moving back down to cruiser to face the likes of Opetaia and/or Okolie aren't exactly big money fights. Prizefighters go where the money is and that isn't at cruiserweight. It's merely a fallback plan in case he can't get the big fights at heavyweight next year.

this is never happening, Usyk is a superstar and he is in a division of superstars, the cruiser has always been a dumpster division for fat LHws or small hws. Usyk did great to unify there but the reality is he had to move away from there. He would never hurt his legacy to go back and fight fucking Makabu.

Now if Canelo is still taking crazy pills and believes he can beat Usyk, in sure usyk would move down to flyweight for that fight.

Usyk is a star but he's no superstar. Now if he were to beat Fury and look impressive in doing it then that might elevate him to that status or close to it. Cruiserweight has always been a dumpster? I disagree. The division has been solid in recent years. Enough that the World Boxing Super Series held two consecutive tournaments featuring the division. While Makabu is one of the absolute weakest titlists in boxing at the moment it's not like there are aren't others elsewhere. Paul Butler at bantamweight comes to mind. Inoue will fight him next for undisputed. That match-up is purely a formality since he has the last remaining world title that Inoue needs for unification.

Canelo vs Usyk is only a pipedream that will never happen. It was only ever a hypothetical that the media is obsessed with. The lowest Usyk could go is cruiserweight and Canelo just handily lost to a small light heavyweight who is even capable of making super middleweight. You'd think the speculation would end then and there but gullible casuals who rode the short bus have kept it alive. There's no shortage of idiots out there.

It’s not just casuals who keep that dumbass fight alive, canelo and usyk still talked about it the other day as if it were a possibility.

As for cruisers, I think that division works only as a stepping stone to move somewhere else, if you stay there then you really aren’t going nowhere, most people don’t even know the division actually exists.

And usyk, I consider him a superstar, he beat a superstar twice and now he is one of the better known boxers in the world. I go a lot by the “my wife” factor. If she knows who they are then they are a pretty big deal.

If I go “Crawford” “Haney” etc. she’ll go “huh?”

if I go “usyk” “fury” she’ll at least go “yea I know who they are”

But obviously Usyk is not on the same level as canelo, Pac-Man, fury, etc.

Usyk and Canelo both know a fight between them is unlikely to happen. Highly unlikely. They only entertain it because gullible fans eat it up. It's added buzz around them. Your wife knows Usyk but not Crawford? Interesting. Technically cruiserweight is a stepping stone but so are all the other "tweener" divisions. A tweener division is one that falls between the original 8 "glamor" divisions (ieg., the junior/light & super weight classes). Usyk was well aware that the big money was at heavyweight. That's why he moved up. He still made some decent scratch at cruiser though. When he won the World Boxing Super Series he took millions in prize money plus the purses he received throughout his run in the tournament.

As long as canelo keeps spewing out that bs, Usyk will entertain it because deep down it would be a huge payday and easy fight for usyk.

My wife knows Usyk brcause he beat Joshua, before that he had no clue who he was.

And yeah I’m not saying cruiser is the only division like that, it’s just a division people sometimes don’t even know exists. We’ve had greats from there for sure, Holyfield, usyk. But a lot of people don’t even know that’s where they came from.

But yeah usyk did great in that division. He improved a lot since then too.

usyk is so good he has to force feed himself to beat up the big guys lol, he can do what tf he wants, he's already head and shoulders clear of all the hws in any measurement of accomplishments
He trains like a mad man so his caloric intake is much more demanding than it was when he was at cruiser. Especially since he already has a high metabolism compared to most heavyweights. He's swimming and running for miles, training for months at a time, and doing hard sparring with giants which takes more energy. It's also harder on his body. That will produce more wear & tear. Obviously it's also harder at his age. He'll be 36 in a few months.
