I was watching Jacare vs. Marcelo from ADCC '05, and Jacare used the body triangle from guard extensively. I'm a lanky guy at 6'0 and ~155lbs, and I can easily use my legs to body triangle from guard, so thought got me thinking, could I put it to use effectively to keep opponents from opening and passing? I love the closed guard and working from there, so if I felt my guard was in danger of being opened, would switching to a body triangle and working on breaking posture be a smart idea? Anyone tried this?

Also, would a kimura be possible from the body triangle position? (Haven't had the chance at trying this out)

Jacare is flexible and athletic enough that he can probably switch at will between closed guard and a body triangle from the front. I bet you aren't that athletic or flexible, and that your time would be better spent on learning to defend your guard properly.

No offense intended.

None taken, and indeed I am not as athletic or flexible as Mr. Jacare. That being said, would it be a good guard to use when breaking someones posture, then switch back to regular closed/open guard as needed. I don't intend to be be there long.

yes, I do. this is an excellent counter to many closed guard passes when used wisely. JT Torres also does this a lot

I would say yes, but don't become the type of guy that when he's in guard just locks up a body triangle and does nothing but stall. But to use it temporarily, sure, it's effective.

If you want to rest, recompose and slow the guy down, by all means, go for it.

Just please don't be the guy who squeezes the shit out of the guy because he's scared of a little movement.

I agree. Though Marcelo made a critical mistake in keeping his hand on the mat for too long, and Jacare took advantage of that.

I don't like using the body triangle from guard because I have short legs, but it would be a good transitional type thing, like everyone above has said.

Some guy tried to use this on me last week and i just made posture and he let go.

At first it made no sense to me but when you mentioned locking up the body triangle and then breaking down posture it makes some sense. Obviously you'd eventually have to open it for most offense, but hey give it a show. In my opinion the best thing i ever did was work on my open guard.

When i roll with my instructor i'll break his guard and then it's almost like i have to start all over because his damn open guard is so hard to pass. It's so frustrating, that's the level i'd like to get to but i'm far from it haha.

Some guy tapped me with this when I first started lol.

He got the body triangle from guard and just squeezed. It felt like my kidneys were going to rupture.

Haven't seen anyone do it in quite awhile though.

Wouldn't it be pretty easy to be ankle locked if you threw on a body triangle from your guard? I know I did it to someone before, but it was just something I made up on the spot.

i would never do this, i use my guard very offensivley and it wouldnt let me throw up triangle or armbars... same reason i dont use it from the back, it takes away your hips

holy shit when bigger guys try this I fucking neck crank them as hard as I can, that's basically a lock to break your floating ribs BS move to use in practice.

Yeah but you could see it coming pretty easily and unlock it before they could get your ankle.

Holding a body triangle too long is just giving the guy on top a chance to rest because he knows you can't do anything without unhooking your legs, and its easy to feel the bottom person unhook their legs so he'll know when to expect something. I personally use it a lot from the bottom, I just locked it up to break posture and immediately switch to open guard once I have their posture broken.

In on of my matches my opponent did this and it was so annoying.
I took him down. He locked up a body triangle and he layed there for three minutes.
I tried working, but as we all know it's just a stalling position.
He got warned by the ref for stalling a few times.
But after that match my training partner showed me a nasty calf crusher you can do when someone who has the dumb idea of putting a body triangle on you while you are in his guard. All you do is sprawl your hips out, get is leg that is hanging down, in front of your body. Close the distance because then it is stuck there, S-Grip under his hips and shoot your hips forward towards him.
It's pretty painful and will make almost anyone tap, I have a few guys that'll let you break their arm at my gym, this submission can also be done if you get caught in a triangle.
