USA vs Russia

[/SIZE]
After the War, Patton wanted to re-arm what was left of the Nazis and invade Russia. We should have let him.:icon_twis

Fight them now or fight them later.

Not following Patton's advice was one of the biggest unspoken blunders in US history.

At that point in time China and Russia were still on good terms. It would have been suicide.
You do realize that China was embroiled in a civil war until 1950 & Patton died in 1945.

Seems more like a tremendous success on behalf of Russia. Putin planned this shit out well and people aren't giving him that credit.

The Russian stock markets are giving him tremendous credit. Or not.

I hope you're right for the sake of all of us, but I fear that this sentiment is quite common among people these days. I imagine many folks prior to World War I thought much the same - due to the interconnectedness of the world and military and technological advancements, there was no way the world would go to war. However, war eventually did erupt.

What about the remaining portion of my post, particularly the trend that in or around the beginning of each century in the last few hundred years, there has been a major armed conflagration?

Well, I don't think those really mean much. We're not talking about natural phenomena like comets streaking by or planets lining up or tectonic plate movement. Those things you have no control over and can somewhat be predicted (planetary movement can be very accurately predicted, of course)

Those great wars were the result of particular sets of world situations. Empires fighting each other, invasions and fighting for land and resources.

We're simply in a different era nowadays. Nowadays, resources from other lands are acquired through multinational companies and loan agencies like the IMF and World Bank. Speculation, penetrating markets, investing, these are the ways that power is gained nowadays.

Military threats are still there, of course, but it's much more subtle. And the big one, of course, is that there is only one country creating worldwide, military threats: the US.

Alternet came up with a great analysis of this today. Touches upon many of the things I've been saying:

What's the Role of American Empire in the New World Order?

That is an excellent article to sum up the state of current affairs. The article acknowledges that we stand somewhat akin to the twilight of 1914, and that is somewhat my point - the specter of a Sarajevo moment.

Exactly.

Churchill's views on Germans apply equally well to Russians:

Honestly though, what if that is Putin's long term goal? Soviet re-union? What if he's been a madman all along and is willing to do whatever it takes to see the USSR he served so faithfully in the KGB, restored.

My God

He's said the fall of the USSR was a bad thing. He is out for revenge for the perceived humiliation of Russia after the Cold War, this is just the start of whats to come.

Putin never actually tried to hide his intentions. It's just whenever Putin said or did anything to imply he wanted to restore the Soviet union people waved it off that he was just appealing to those old school soviets. A major warning sound should have been the fact that Putin restored the old Soviet national anthem. I don't think anyone really believes he wants the exact old Soviet union but he certainly wants some kind of restored version of it. I think pretty soon the old Soviet flag might make a resurgence too. What I think they should do is start periodontally change their flag, gradually filling their current flag up with more and more red relative to what stage they feel they're at.

It's amusing that most folks seem to be so scared at the specter of a "Soviet Re-Union" and calling Putin an aggressor, when the biggest aggressor in the last 13 years since ushering in the 21st century has been the US and it maintains military bases across the world, invaded sovereign countries on trumped up pretexts much to the dismay and chagrin of Skull and Bones Kerry.

The hostility toward Russia has always pervaded in the upper crust of the US oligarchy. However, it was on full display when Putin basically checked the advance of American aggression in Syria. From then, the US media gradually went on the offensive in its smear campaign of Russia and the very slanted anti-Russia news, be it against Sochi, or the purported "anti-gay" law which is another fabrication designed to whip up US public opinion by playing up the homosexual card in international relations. The US has long sought to erode and box in Russia and its influence, much like the US seeks to contain China. That would be the goal of any dominant empire that does not want its monopoly of power and influence to erode to other actors.

Having checks balances on the international stage is no different than checks and balances on the national stage. Monopolies are always bad, be they corporate or political.

Well, yeah, he mentions that this is similar to the early 20th century for one paragraph, but the other 30 paragraphs are a breakdown of the differences between other historical points and today.

I mean, this isn't science and it can't be predicted with a high degree of certainty, but the arguments for there not being a power vs power showdown are much more compelling, IMO.

If we're worried about global catastrophe, Israel/US's threats to Iran are MUCH more realistic.

The U.S. is really in no place to engage Russia and in the long term it would be a strategic disaster. Putin knows this so he'll push as far as he can without stepping on the US or Europe's toes too much. Unfortunately the Ukrainians are probably on their own.

Long term China is the bigger concern for the west and a neutered and politically alienated russia Is bad news for both Europe and the United States. Im as afraid of the chickenshit sabre rattlers in the american right as I am putin. The chinese would be laughing their assets off if Obama and Putin, the e.u. f'themselves over. It'd be like ww2 all over again. The chinese would play the waiting game than pick a side to back. Then when the dust settles they'd be the worlds(or whats left of it) superpower

China's interests in Asia alone would eventually drag China in too. See the trouble they're causing now? Well imagine that when the US is too busy to keep them in check.

Not following Patton's advice was one of the biggest unspoken blunders in US history.

Had the Allies followed Patton's advice and plans, they would've been steamrolled into France in 2 weeks, and pushed back into the Atlantic in 4 weeks.

All of Europe would speak russian as their second language.
