I'm new to Bjj, and I notice a lot of my peers wearing under armor under their gis. I just got my gi a couple of days ago, and I haven't trained in it yet, but do you guys recommend me buying an under armor shirt? Someone told me that under armor prevents "mat burn" and stuff like that.

Definitely not something you need to rush out and buy, but I do think its comfortable. Plus you can use it for no-gi.

I've never felt the need to wear a rash guard under my gi....
I dont understand why people do.

i feel like shit if i'm not wearing anything under the gi. i always wear a shirt or a rashguard.

TS, under armour is an awesome rashguard company. i have two of their rashguards and will never buy another brand. they're durable, they're comfortable and they aren't too expensive around here. try rolling without one, if you feel fine there's no need to buy a rashguard. but if you're going to buy a rashguard, buy under armour.

I only get gi burn on my face.. Never really seen it been an issue on the torso.

I personally go gi top only, I feel like I overheat with more

I don't wear the compression shorts under my gi pants, keeps my nuts safe without the discomfort of a cup.

Rashguard refers to surfing, not jiujitsu

It can refer to any number of activities, the underlying concept of abrasive rubbing causing a rash and a garment designed to prevent that is the same.

It got its name from surfing though, not from prevention in jiujitsu. I hear people commonly think rashguards stop skin diseases. UA are compression gear and not rash guards anyhow

I've never seen them in a brick and mortar store, but if you shop online, you can actually get rash guards through UA.

I know rashguards by grappling gear companies are overpriced, but good ones do have features that are specific for our sport. The main issue I see with Underarmor compression gear is the length. In action they ride up on tall guys and dudes end up looking like they are wearing midriff tops, lol.

I try to support companies I like, Manto, Moya, Nogi. But I also have a long sleeve compression top from Walmart that has lasted just as long and served me just as well... for less than 20 bucks.

I tend to wear one just to prevent my sweat from dripping on others. Nothing is nastier than some big old water buffalo dropping sweat from his hairy chest onto me. Therefore, I try to be considerate of other partners and always wear a shirt or rashguard under my gi.

I feel the same way. I sweat...A LOT, and I feel gross rubbing my sweaty bare chest onto my training partner's face. Also, I hate when someone is passing guard on me and they grab eight to ten of my chest hairs along with the lapel. No bueno.

Don't wear a Fuckin rashguard under your GI.
I hate ppl that wear shirts or rashguards under their GI, its just another way for your training partners to injure their fingers when they get caught in it.

What? I have never seen anyone injure a finger do to a rashguard. I can see something like a cotton shirt which will bunch and wrap around fingers but a shirt which CLINGS to the body?

THIS. Sweaty chest to partner contact is nasty. The only thing worse is the guy who refuses to wear any kind of shirt/rash guard during no-gi.

I wear an underarmour rashguard for no-gi work because it is almost impossible to get fingers or toes caught in it. T-shirts hang loose and can snag things easily. I don't think its ever happened while I've been wearing a compression top.

I don't wear one under my gi, because I see no need to, and I think I'd get incredibly hot.

I got an allergy from the detergent is used to wash my gi once and I was forced to wear a rashguard under it... Since that day I changed my detergent and never rolled without a rashguard anymore :D. It feels much better. It keeps me a bit warmer during winter and my gi feels less soaked during summer. In my BJJ gym most of the people wear rashguards under their gi. On the other hand I'm the only one doing it in my judo gym (besides girls for obvious reasons), and other guys are laughting at me for doing it. I guess it's part of the traditional mentality of judo

There is no added benefit from wearing a $50 rashguard over a $2 FTL tee shirt underneath your gi.
