Newly-crowned UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who strangled top contender Ciryl Gane into submission at UFC 285 to secure the strap back in March, was recently nominated for two ESPY awards, including Best Comeback Athlete and Best UFC Fighter.

“I just don’t know if one fight in the year against Ciryl Gane puts you in that position,” Cormier said on his ESPN show “DC & RC” (transcribed by MMA Junkie). “And that’s no knock on Ciryl. It was just one fight. You gotta think of the storylines that follow these other athletes. From (Islam) Makhachev beating [Charles Oliveira] to win the belt, from Makhachev beating Alexander Volkanovski.”

He's salty for sure, as he legit hates Juicehead.

But it is a decent point. One thirty second fight after ages of inactivity isn't exactly what Id use as a barometer for fighter of the year.

I mean even the fight itself wasn't anything super rememberful, other than how clueless Gane was the second he hit the ground.

I really like DC and appreciate his commitment to folk style wrestling with youth, buuutttttttt, DC, my man, F$ck off.

He's obviously 100% correct. It's nonsensical to think that one fight should be enough for the "best fighter" award. And that one fight wasn't even against a champion; personally, I don't think Gane is even a top 5 HW. But DC is probably also salty. These things aren't mutually exclusive.

Daniel Cormier trying really hard to turn me into a Jon Jones fan.

Guys, it's not that hard.

Lifelong grappler DC just absolutely could not understand how fellow lifelong grappler Jones, who had his arms around non-lifelong grappler Gane's neck, managed to submit him.

How dare you instead think that he was instead bitter that his career rival accomplished the one thing DC had over him in their respective careers where Jones was already 2-0 over him with nearly 3x the amount of title wins on top of that.

Is Jon Jones seriously being considered for fighter of the year?
I think it is fine, whoops Gane who had just gone to a decision with the champ Francis after Francis annihilated Stipe. Gane also looked good against Tuivasa, Lewis, Volkov, Rosenstruik, and Junior. Then Jon comes out and just starches him in the same manner in which he could punt a toddler across the arena. Doesn't mean he has to win, but Jones' star power mixed with his ability to perform under the brightest of lights pretty much guaranteed a nod.

Islam also didn't win his belt against a champion.

Nor did he defend against a LW.

But hey, like DC said it's the storylines that matter right?

I don’t understand this thread. Many are claiming DC is being salty, but can you really name Jon Jones for fighter of the year for winning, and only participating in, ONE fight in 2023? DC’s job on the show is to talk about all things related to fighting. Is he supposed to ignore such a stupid decision by ESPN because Jon Jones is involved? He didn’t even say a negative word about Jones.

As impressive as the win was, it's still just one win. No one has ever been nominated for foty with just one win.

Other fighters have done more than him this year.
