It's a tough watch and you feel bad for him, but on the bright side he's incredibly lucky to be on this side of the ground, and to be able to still move around under his own power and communicate (even if it is compromised) is amazing considering what happened to him. There are rumors that a lot of that stuff is fabricated, so we’ll probably never entirely know.
