I remember distinctly my thoughts when watching Jiri’s debut in the UFC. He seemed to be someone who legit was winning due to intangible factors. Chin, heart, pressure, diversity of attack. He was legit winning off of creativity and sheer bravery and ignorance to the fundamentals, and as we’ve learned, that often works against stiff opponents who are so accustomed to fighting in regular patterns.
Another great example is Francis pre-Miocic II. Just winging it and winning off of pure brute force, not any technique.
Well, looky looky here… Sergei meets resistance with superior skills, no adaptations, no plan B, just the same ‘do this and win’ tactics.
Then we flip to Jiri. Eventually the chin in the sky, total freestyle striking style, caught out. Had his man rocked, got slapped.
This happens a lot. O’Malley is next.
