What method and why? Was thinking about buying a pair but when I fight I'll be barefoot so I'm unsure of what to do.

Well you should be training as close as you can to how you would be fighting. A change in something as fundamental as grip can upset your striking.....etc.

Exactly.
This is why I always have to stop myself from getting used to shadowboxing in my socks when I'm bored.
I'm training not for competition, but primarily for self defense, and fights like those happen outside in my plain sneakers (which is why I always make sure to train in them).

You should train barefoot, so you are used to training as you fight. If you train with something assisting you i.e. boxing shoes, it will affect you when you fight without them because the difference of power you generate from the grip you get with the boxing shoes is somewhat significant. That would be the same thing as wrestling with and without wrestling shoes.

It depends on your coach. Are you learning how to box at a MMA school or a boxing gym? If you're at an MMA school, I'm sure they'd let you, but if you go to an old-school boxing gym, that's a little different.

If you're doing it for boxing alone then you're going to need shoes.
