hi guys

i am new to the sport and to the city of toronto
so i decided to try many schools out and see which was the right one for me,

if you guys have any comments please add them

first i visited toronto bjj,
where jorge britto is the head coach,
big school full of guys that compete and the the technique is solid
especially if your into gi bjj.

but the classes were WAY to big and if your into nogi
its almost ignored there.
also the prices are VERY,VERY HIGH
also the free mouth is not really a free mouth

http://www.torontobjj.com/home.cfm

REAL MMA AND FITNESS

VERY friendly environment where they welcome people
in with open arms.

excellent technique being taught by the main bjj
coach Misha Cirkunov who is easily one of the best
heavyweight grapplers in north america.
his experience in bjj, wrestling, judo and mma is indeed large

there other also other wonderful coaches in grappling sports like bjj and sambo

also the place has a great boxing program with many good
boxers training there and willing teach new people.

the best part for me is of course that the price is not high at all
and the place is huge with tons of equipment-also open till late hours

but it is a bit of a journey for me,
because it is around dufferin and steeles
while i live around young and eglinton

openmat

very friendly environment and welcoming
decent training and technique.

but again very very high prices and they try to push
their extreme left wing views on people.
also the fact that i am not physically a weak man
was almost looked down up by many not so athletic
students there

ALSO AGAIN THE 30 DAY FREE TRAIL MOUTH IS not really
free

http://openmat.ca/

toronto nogi

nice school and welcoming

but it seems more for a casual mma fan that wants to get in shape
not someone who wants to be good at bjj or other combat sports
but i may be wrong since i only did one class there
and saw one booth camp class

would you say that a higher proportion of physically weak people train at openmat?

also, can you go to Headrush training center and get the prices for me?

I train at Toronto BJJ and it is stupidly expensive, but Jorge Britto is amazing. The sheer love he has for teaching and the joy he gets at seeing his students excel is not something you can pay for. Of all the schools I've trained at, I've never had a coach like Jorge or experienced the progress I have had with him.

www.rjjontario.ca

He started teaching classes at this school. It's much cheaper and as far as I can tell it's because he just wanted to get back to the uncomplicated happiness he feels helping guys learn the art. It's much cheaper than Toronto BJJ, but they only have classes Mon/Wed/Fri nights.

Mecha MMA is at Bathurst and Queen and is a huge MMA gym. Kid Yamamoto trained there when he was in Edmonton. There are some MMA gyms north of you, but off the top of my head I can't remember them.

There's also a Straight Blast Gym in East Toronto that I have no experience with but have always wanted to try out because it combines the two favourite arts I've studied: BJJ and Filipino stick/knife fighting.

I think this is all in your head. And, even if it's true, you'd have to be a pretty massively built dude for a school to dislike you on principle.

Also think your complaints about left-wing views are ridiculous and also in your head. I've never had that experience at Open Mat.

thank you i have never heard of mecha mma or straight blast
who teaches bjj there?
do they have boxing programs

have you been to the other schools i mentioned

i can see what you mean about jorge but
no matter how good of a teacher you are
massive classes dont give people to much attention

yes it used to be grant brothers

im not really training at the moment, im thinking about possibly training at grant in the near future

how strong would you say you are relative to the people you trained with at open mat? You sound really strong. Did you have to hold back alittle?

Wait, what? Explain how they try to push their left wing politics on people.

i am not super strong or anything
just a guy with a decent amount of weight training

i was not going super hard at all, just after every roll
someone would make a comment that i pulled this or that
move out because i was big etc

and most of the rolls were preety even
in all the other schools no one made comments like this

i will check out grants-headrush
have you checked out real mma
they are right beside grants???

His school at www.rjjontario.ca has really small classes, like 2-6 people. I cannot say enough good things about them.

Mecha probably has boxing. It's huge.

Here is Straight Blast:

I'm not from Toronto, but I have trained a number of times at a number of different clubs there.

I'm not sure where your feeling about Openmat came from - I am a "bigger guy", 6'1", ~195lbs, and I have never experienced anything but a welcome attitude there. I've also never had "extreme left wing views" pushed on me. They do have a very chill vibe there; maybe that's not your thing?

Toronto Nogi is a great school with a large focus (obviously) on no-gi. I think they may only have one gi class a week.

You may also want to check out Greenwood Jiu-Jitsu (Checkmat affiliate; Chris Greenwood is the instructor there - it is a BJJ only school), or Primal MMA (formerly Central MMA. Egor Radzik [owner of Redstar Kimonos] is the BJJ instructor there).

There is also Action and Reaction MMA (Fernando Zulick "Gringo) which might be a bit out of your way, and Body of Four (Marco Costa) which is not too far away.

Try them all out. Every school has some great people at it - just find one with the right balance of vibe, schedule, price, and location that you're looking for. You're lucky to have so much great training at your fingertips.

Are you talking about Jon Kim's school? If so, agreed. Jon is great.

Dunno, I've only attended classes there once, though that will change in a week. Jorge is teaching out of a Tae Kwon Do school in addition to being the lead instructor at Toronto BJJ.

i hope your joking about the tkd thing and jorge lol

but its cool that his other school has small classes
i really feel you learn this way

thank you for the info,
my friend checked out chris greenwood's school and said it was excellent
with the focus being on modern sport bjj,
i will try it for sure but my focus is mainly on nogi.

to be honest i have not heard the best things about fernando zulick and his teaching
but i dont want to talk badly of a place or person i have never met or been too

and about the openmat place
who knows maybe we rolled with different people
but i didnt get a chill vibe at all

i am a super chilled out person and from the schools i have been too
real mma is the most chilled out vibe
and since your a bigger guy there are quite a few good bigger guys to work with there, bjj guys and a couple of world class judo players that come in to work on their ground game with misha who is big but moves very smoothly and can teach
anyone big or small

at redstar is the focus on bjj or sambo?

I highly recommend checking out Omar Salvosa's BJJ Team Ascension.
Located at 31 Progress Avenue, Unit 1 Scarborough, Ontario M1P 4S6 (Kennedy & Hwy 401)

http://www.salvosabjj.com/

This is one of the best team's in Ontario; typically a toss between Renzo Gracie Team and ours. Omar is an excellent down to earth teacher, no ego, and he is like the incarnation of Buddha, the guy is seriously a blessing to be around. Guy's like Arthur and Justin Soni are great competitors (purple and brown, respectively).

So does Jorge. Not sure why you would laugh at that.

What a fucking joke. This is an advertisement disguised as a sincere review of gyms. Notice how one of the gyms in the first post has nothing intrinsically wrong with it while the rest do.

Normally I wouldn't say anything and let the guy do his marketing but when mista Chang parrots carricatures of gyms that he has never even trained at then he deserves to be called out.

man that Real MMA club, i feel like checkin it out very soon..
