Not too sure where this post goes exactly, so I appolgize ahead of time.

What in your opinion is one of the better MMA gym's with lots of talent in the North Carolina area - Im planning on leaving South Florida in a few months and heading that way. I a currently training with ATT, and unfortunately there's none in the area that I know of.

Thanks

Yo,

NC is a pretty big place. Where exactly are you heading?

I recommend googling Team ROC in NC, they have gyms all over the place. I don't know much about them, besides what people have told me, but alot of their guys fight in regional shows, and some bigger ones too.

Or if you're moving towards the RDU area, East Coast Submissions Academy is apparently pretty good. I just moved here for school, and I'm going to be training there in January, a boxing friend of mine told me about it.

Those are the only ones I really know about, if you find a good one, you should tell me about your experiences.

i wouldn't mind hearing more on this too, here in this part of SC there's not much to choose from...i'm pretty happy where i'm at for the time being focusing on JKD and boxing, but i'd like to get more into MMA in the future

Too Bad.....S. Florida is an MMA hotbed and ATT is pretty much top of the heap. You will be Jones'n for a Cuban sandwich, a Mojito, and ATT before you see leaves again!

Team ROC. That's who I train with. Lots of top notch guys to train with.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I checked into Team ROC and I liked the basis around the team I just am trying to look for a larger facility with more bags and possibly a cage. Is there even one in NC?

and yes I know, South FL is an amazing location for MMA gyms... there EVERYWHERE, and I love training at ATT... it's just too expensive right now and being a college student with the goal of fighting is hard. NC housing is so cheap! Just seems like the right move for me right now.

Keep me posted everyone.. thanks.

If you're moving to the Fort Bragg/ Fayetteville area because of the military, don't expect too much. They have a Team Roc gym but from what I saw, the stand up was poor, the grappling is decent, and they're very good at squeezing a lot of money from you in the form of their gis and uniforms and equipment they require you to buy. There are a few jiu-jitsu places, karate, and taekwondo places but other than that zip. I had a similar problem in the Raleigh/ Durham area but I'm not too sure. I heard from others that in Wilmington, they have good wrestling so that probably accompanies decent mma gyms but im not sure about that. Hope this helps a little.

Yeah there's team ROC, but as mentioned earlier their stand up is poor, though not sucking, they've got some good strikers. If you're a big guy that's where you may want to go. There is also Redpoint which has horrible striking. I've watched their fighters do an entire hour's session with their hands even with the chest. There is also Angel's Gym, which is actually where I train-though not right now due to time constraints and job. Honestly IMO the best 'fighting' gym around. Not as expensive as the others I think, but about $125/month last I heard. They train boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, and submission wrestling with BJJ. The boxing and thai trainers are awesome, reigning champs in their field. It's a small place though, but they've got a ring and a small cage. If you're in the fayetteville/bragg area I'd seriously recomend checking them out.

A side not in ROC. The ROC in the fayetteville area has a reputation for catering to the military and kinda shrugging off the civilians. If you're a civilian I'm told you're just a sparring partner for over pumped meat heads and you won't get much instruction...or so I'm told, I've not verified this. Our heavyweight MMA guy goes to ROC for sparring because Angel's has no one in his weight and Redpoint can't fight.

Oh yeah, Angel's doesn't require any fancy uniform or gi. Just show up in some fight gear, I'd recomend you bring your own gloves... the supplied ones are just worn out.

Could you go into a bit of what Angel's does? I'm intrigued by this new found knowledge because I've never heard of it from anyone. It sounds amazing though.

With Team ROC, the rumor is definitely a go, but it's for their fighters trying to go pro. Anyone else is meat to get beat on.

Team ROC is good for most of the state. East Coast submissions is good.

If you're near Wilmington or Wrightsville beach, check out

Evolution Mixed Martial Arts & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

That's where I train.

The NC Quest Center has a very good BJJ program also through TEAM ROC on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights as well as every Mon-Fri morning. They're located right where Durham and Chapel Hill meet.

To be honest, if you want good, solid boxing and Muay Thai, Evolution is the place to be in North Carolina. It's a big focus of the gym, whereas Team ROC is a Royce Gracue affiliate, and is mostly a BJJ gym.

If you're serious then sure, though kinda seems you're being sarcastic. But my opinion is that they're great. Primarily a striking gym. Almost all training is emphasis on striking but everyday there is both grappling and striking going on. Sparring and the like. Real small gym though, you get the feeling of the old rocky-esque gym walking in. Trainers all have great skills at fighting and teaching. The owner is kinda hard but that comes from being an army ranger trainer guy. Though he did publish a book and has been hailed for his mating of tai-chi and boxing into one good fighting art.

They are also on the web for better explaination: Angels Gym - Martial Arts - Supls - 5213 Raeford Road Fayetteville NC 28304

Some vidoes on there as well.

They participate in many local fights from boxing, kickboxing, thai boxing, naga and bjj events and mma. I believe the last MMA event in fayetteville, nc winners were from here.

If you're in the area look em up. Around 4-7pm is the best time to drop in so you'd see more people in there. Earlier times are kinda 1 on 1 times, but not always.
