So guys I got a pair of the Top King boxing gloves to try out the weekend just gone for my trip to Fairtex at Pattaya. It's my last day of training and the gloves are still going strong, but I am almost dead!
Anyway when I first got the gloves my initial impression was they are King just with the Top King slapped on them. However I've got the feeling that there are subtle differences in design and construction. I need to confirm this when I get back to the office on Tuesday and do a comparison of the gloves, so I will be adding a bit more to this.
The overall construction of the glove is very good. It is modeled on the newly designed King boxing glove, so it has a slightly longer cuff with the oz on and a full leather closure instead of the leather/elasticated closure on the previous gloves. I know some of you guys will not like the leather closure. I kind of had this in the back of my head too. However when I actually got the gloves on there is like some internal padding in the wrist area (never seen this before), which means when you close the gloves they feel very secure. However an immediate annoyance for me was the longer cuff which is rounded. It was digging into my forearm and I was just thinking this is not going to be good when it comes to clinching.
After trying the gloves on I went down to train. Did a little bit of stretching then straight into pad work. The initial annoyance of the longer cuff suddenly disappeared. I guess I wasn't thinking too clearly when I was trying the gloves on. The cuff only digs into your forearm when you bend your hand upwards and when you train you hardly ever do that. My next concern was is there going to be enough padding in the knuckle area for me able to punch properly without adding damage to my already messed up hands. The short answer was yes. They have got the balance just right. The foam is not too soft so it feels like you are boxing with pillows on nor too dense that you feel the impact of the shot down your whole arm.
Overall Top King boxing gloves are a well designed and constructed boxing glove. I feel comfortable wearing and using them myself. I want to get my hands on the air version next, because my hands were getting very hot wearing these ones.
