Hopefully someone will ask Cruise soon how far along the scripting process is and what jets the government is letting them use. My money is on the F-18 but I'm desperately hoping for the F-22. That would be so damn freaking cool.

Cruise wearing his eleveator boots. @Adamant

They're just borrowing Harrison Ford's plane for a couple weeks.

Not a fan of Top Gun, but I would find it insulting if they went with the F-18. Those things have been around since the mid 80's. Hell, they even used them in the original Independence Day. Gotta be a fifth generation fighter like the F-22 or F-35 if they want to be taken seriously as the top pilot program.

Also, the idea of pilots fighting against obsolescence with the advent of unmanned aerial fighters was already done 22 years ago, and much better than Top Gun could possibly hope to accomplish.

Ironically, F-18s are still used, even in the real Top Gun program. But I will definitely be slightly bummed if that's what they go with. But hey, as long as it's not CGI, I really have nothing to complain about.

It's not guaranteed that that'll be the story. That was some goofy shit Tony Scott came up with. Hopefully they've scrapped the whole obsolescence/drones idea. That sounded super fucking lame. The fact that Cruise didn't really acknowledge the "drones" question and kept pushing hard about "jets" that's a great sign.

Paramount Sets July 12, 2019 Release for TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Maverick will fly again in summer 2019.

Paramount has set the release date for it's Top Gun sequel as July 12, 2019. Tom Cruise, who once again will play the lead, has said the film will be titled Top Gun: Maverick and that he expected to begin filming by the end of the year.

Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is circling the sequel to the 1986 hit, which follows fighter pilots as they grapple with drone tech that is making their old style of flying obsolete. Jerry Bruckheimer is returning to produce the sequel, along with Skydance's David Ellison and Cruise.

The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott and also starred Anthony Edwards. It saw Cruise play a hot shot pilot who becomes a student at the most elite fighter pilot school in the world, with the ending suggesting he'd go on to teach there.

So far, the Top Gun sequel has the date to itself. A Spider-Man: Homecoming followup is set for a week earlier, while The Lion King opens a week later.

Damn, gotta wait all the way to 2019. That's kind of gay. It's also kind of gay that it sounds like they're officially planning on moving forward with the drone shit.

But I'm glad we finally have an official release date!

Yea same.. screw the drones... and screw 2019.. give it next summer.

I'm thinking the drone reference is just a nod to the previous announcement about the drone garbage. I (hope) don't think it's based on anything current. But since then I've seen both an article and Cruise talk about it being about jets. The article made reference to it being about Cruise being a Top Gun instructor training the next generation.

Deadline broke the news of Top Gun 2 getting an official release date and finalizing a deal to bring Kosinski onto the project. With he and Cruise officially attached, Paramount has staked its claim with a July 12, 2019 release date. The report also details the story briefly, summarizing the plot as Maverick being a flight instructor for the next generation of pilots.

Wow they're sandwiching the release between 2 other blockbusters.... not sure if that's the smartest thing to do but what teh hell do I know about it anywayz.

I can see them doing a drone thing & Jets too... like you got this new school drone thing going on that competes with the next gen of hot shot pilots.... & at some point the drones fail a mission or something where the pilots are needed for their hands on approach. I don't mind it at all if it were something like that.

Either that, or Maverick is being forced to teach drones, but failing a mission with them, Maverick suits up & handles it the old school way Iron Eagle style or something like that.

They are making the release date gay to recapture the spirit of the original film.

Val's story is getting pretty sad. He went from being one of the top actors in Hollywood to being this shell of his former self.

I hope he can recover but it's not looking good for him.

Darn he lost so much weight.

The F-22 is the Air Force's jet, not the Navy's.

And it makes air to air combat pretty unexciting. That thing can lock on and fire weapons at a target way before the target ever knows it's even there.

Aye yi yi, I'm not really sure how I feel about this. Some of it sounds ok but a lot of it sounds extremely meh. It seems like they are going for the typical and tired "next generation" type of movie instead of focusing mainly on Maverick. IDK. I know it's extremely early so we'll see how things shape up in the coming months.

The Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, will pit Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell against the son of Goose, among other figures in positions of authority. By the time we catch up with Maverick in the present-day, he has become a flight instructor and mentor to the next generation of hotshot pilots. However, that doesn’t mean that that the late Nick “Goose” Bradshaw’s son is a fan of Maverick; in fact, he very much holds the latter responsible for his father’s death.

Top Gun: Maverick was in development for years before it seemingly fell off the track for good in 2012, following the death of original Top Gun director Tony Scott. The sequel has since been revived under the watchful eyes of director Joseph Kosinski and screenwriter Eric Warren Singer, fresh off their collaboration on the true story-based firefighter drama Only the Brave. Ahead of the movie’s planned 2018 production start, breakdowns for the various new players in the Top Gun sequel have been made available.

These Top Gun: Maverick character breakdowns (which THS picked up) reveal that Goose’s son is named Wrigley and is aged 20-29, has “All-American good looks”, graduated from an Ivy League school, and has a lot in common with Maverick, in spite of the tension between them. The character rundown also mentions one Penny Benjamin, a woman (40-55 years old) who “has been around pilots all her life” and serves as the love interest for Cruise’s onscreen counterpart in the Top Gun sequel. Penny also has a young 10-12 year old daughter named Miriam.

Other characters listed in the Top Gun: Maverick breakdowns include the following members of Maverick’s class (all of who are aged 20-29, like Wrigley):
  • “Sugar”, a Latina with a loner mentality. She also serves as a love interest for Wrigley.
  • “Kansas”, a competitive fellow with “Southern Charm” to spare.
  • “Otter”, a nerdy type who’s also super-competitive.
  • “Shotgun”, a “burly and earnest” fellow.
  • “Drone”, a “sharp and tough” young woman.
On the older side of the table in Top Gun: Maverick, there’s Admiral Robby “Caspar” Benjamin (aged 50-69), a “No nonsense Texan [with a] laid-back demeanor [that] masks his intensity.” Caspar also happens to be Penny’s brother and distrusts Maverick, based on his “selfish attitude in the Sky.” There’s also the character Boyd (age 50), a two-star general “who takes no s**ts”. It remains to be seen for now if Boyd is Team Maverick or not.

While Val Kilmer has expressed his interest in reprising “Iceman” for the Top Gun sequel, there’s nothing in these character breakdowns to suggest that the character plays a significant role in the film (though a cameo shouldn’t be ruled out just yet). Cruise will set to work on Top Gun: Maverick shortly after he completes production on Mission: Impossible 6 within the next few months, so more official casting updates regarding the newcomers in the Top Gun sequel should start flowing in pretty soon.
