Tom Aspinall should be stripped

There’s no point in having an interim champion when the current heavyweight champ is uninjured and also defended the belt during the interim champ’s reign. Tom should have lost interim champion status in November as soon as the bell rung for the Jones/Stipe fight.

The way it works is the disputed champion needs to unify against the interim champion to become undisputed champion. It made no sense for Jones to fight anyone other than Tom to begin with.

It also made no sense for Aspinall to ever be the interim champion.

He won that fake belt in Nov 2023. Jon won the real one in March 2023.

7 months with no defense doesn't need an interim. They only made it an interim because Jon was supposed to defend against Stipe on the same card that Aspinall won his fake belt, but when Jon pulled out with an injury they put together the interim nonsense for Tom without even knowing how long Jon would be out.

It does make sense.

The UFC have done this before when a fighter is going to be out for a long time. If I remember correctly, it was known that Jon Jones injury in 2023 would keep him out for over 6 months.

In fact, I think he UFC would have ultimately stripped most champions in that spot.

I mean, I kinda agree.

He hasn't fought in almost a year; he just pretty much sits on his interim belt.

He should either defend or vacate.

They wouldn't have stripped someone for getting injured leading up to a title fight 7 months later. When has this actually happened? The stuff with Jiri and Hill isn't the same because they chose to give up the belt.

Even if they knew it was gonna be another 6 months, it doesn't matter. That would still only bring it out to 13 months. In that situation if the expected time got worse or the champ got injured again with a return fight booked, they'd very likely strip them.
